Thoughts from Randy-Blog Faces
Everyone loves a parade, including me, and ranking right up there as one of the best in New Mexico is our State Summer Games Parade of Athletes. It’s hard to explain what it is that makes this parade so darn wonderful, but the long and short of it can be found in the overwhelming expressions seen on the faces that fill the stadium when they all come marching in. 1,077 athletes -wired and fully present. Together as a state - representing their community – their team – their family - themselves, as they rightly take their place in the world of sport. Faces say a lot, and there is no better way to tell this story.
Congratulations and thank you to all our Summer Games athletes, volunteers and supporters
It was yet another Special Olympics-filled weekend to be remembered. Over 1,077 Special Olympics New Mexico athletes—which included Unified Partners—eagerly descended upon Albuquerque for the 2011 SONM State Summer Games presented by Mountain States Insurance on May 20 – 22 to compete in Track and Field, Bocce, Gymnastics, Cycling and Volleyball. Congratulations to all our Special Olympics athletes, who represented some 46 delegations throughout New Mexico, for all their hard work training and practicing, and for each accomplishment at our Summer Games. Also, special thanks to our Games Sponsors and volunteers who helped make this year another high quality sports experience for our fans. Whether you missed the 2011 State Summer Games or want to relive the excitement, SONM fans can catch an archived online broadcast of Friday night’s Opening Ceremonies and Saturday’s Track and Field, Bocce and Softball Throw Competitions provided by media sponsor Proview Networks. SUMMER GAMES BLOOD DRIVE You may have also noticed SONM fans wearing blue and yellow bandages around their arms. That’s because SONM and United Blood Services joined forces to bring a mobile blood drive to our 2011 Summer Games. Thanks to everyone who donated blood, SONM was able to provide UBS with 56 units from 49 donors, which exceeded the goal set between both organizations. There will be another blood drive at the 2011 Four Corners Invitational, where each onsite donation will provide at $5 donation back to SONM. “SONM’s volunteers, board members, athletes and their families were so very altruistic and giving,” said United Blood Services New Mexico Senior Donor Recruitment Representative Michele Moore Wright. “While one donation of blood can save three lives, this amount of contribution to the United Blood Services translates to saving the lives of 168 people.”
Graduating Athletes
Special Olympics New Mexico is proud to announce the graduation of three of our athletes. Byron Neumann graduated from Manzano High School
