Thoughts from Randy-Blog

All of You

In fourteen days Special Olympics New Mexico’s State Summer Games will begin – full throttle, and I want to invite all of you.  Yep – every single one of you. In fact, I want to invite all of you to come not just for one event or a few hours, but for all three days.  Why?  Because it WILL be three days out of your life that will change how you see yourself – change how you see your life - and change how you see other people and their lives.

You can’t come to these Games and not see things differently.

Supporting Special Olympics Saves Lives Through United Blood Services Partnership

During the State Summer Games in May support for Special Olympics New Mexico will not only improve lives, it will help save them.  That’s because SONM and United Blood Services are joining forces in an effort to not only raise awareness of both organizations, but to increase each one’s impact in New Mexico.

This year, a blood drive will be onsite at both our 2011 State Summer Games on May 21st in Albuquerque. Each blood donation to the United Blood Services will award $1 to Special Olympics New Mexico with the potential to raise a total of $6,000.

SONM’s goal during its 2011 State Summer Games is to help UBS reach 50 new donors.  Pre-SONM State Games blood-drives registration is required and available online at UnitedBloodServices.org.  During the month of August, appointments and walk-ins are available for supporters who choose to donate directly at UBS locations. According to UBS, the impact of offering a minimum of one donation can in effect save three human lives.

Area Games Give Communities an Opportunity to Bond, Grow

On Saturday, April 16 dozens of SONM athletes, coaches, volunteers and family members from within Special Olympics New Mexico’s Area 2 region gathered at Taos High School to compete in the 2011 Area 2 Games.

Athletes representing numerous delegations from Santa Fe to Las Vegas arrived sporting shirts and signs the honored the town from which they came.  Local program newbie, Penasco, made the most of their SONM debut, arriving in matching uniforms and with many supporters.

“The importance of Area Games is that it gives us all the opportunity to spend time getting to know our other athletes and families from neighboring towns,” said SO Santa Fe Local Program Coordinator Donna Lopez-Rios. “It’s a more intimate setting, which helps prepare us for when we come down for the State Games.  Once there, we’re not just rooting for our own delegation anymore.  We’re rooting for every athlete who represents Area 2.”

Cops on Doughnut Shops  and 7-Eleven a HIT

Special Olympics New Mexico would like to send out the biggest THANK YOU to both Krispy Kreme locations and all 23 7-Eleven locations in the Albuquerque, Rio Rancho areas. Together with the Law Enforcement Torch Run consisting of the Horse Mounted Unit, K-9 Unit, GREAT/DARE, Motorcycles, McGruff the Crime Dog, Open Space Airboat and ATV, APD Traffic Unit, DWI, Communications, 911, Recruiting and SWAT  $3,400.00 was raised in one weekend from Krispy Kreme. The Director of Special Events and Torch Run Liaison Kelly Harris is thrilled with the support the community has given and is looking forward to a very successful future.  SONM is also excited to announce that $11,500.00 was raised for the month of April with 7-Eleven. We are thankful to the managers and staff who support SONM.

The money raised in these events will continue to support the training and competition for 2,600 athletes all over New Mexico. Thank you to all who participated and we can't wait to see you next year.
