Thoughts from Randy-Blog
Facebook,
Twitter, and Blogs - OH MY

A couple of weeks
ago I attended a professional
development session at the Special
Olympics National Business Meeting
entitled “Leadership and Effectiveness
Among Nonprofits.” I went in thinking
I would be hearing thoughts around
leadership development, when
surprisingly, it turned out to be two
hours well-spent learning about social
media assets and their potential
to build organizational capacity.
I learned about
hash tags, bitley links, and brand
identity - but more importantly – I
learned that no matter what this baby
boomer might think about how we
communicate these days - our world is
never going back to the ways we used to
do it. Darn it.

Tip A Cop Rises to New Heights

This year the first round of Applebee's Tip A Cop held January
27 in Las Cruces and Rio Rancho and
February 17 in the Albuquerque area raised the most ever. The total
amount comes in at a whopping $17,675.08. This is amazing. Thanks
to all the police officers who gave their time to support our
Special Olympics athletes, from singing songs, to multiple push ups
in the middle of Applebee's, their enthusiasm was contagious. A great
big thank you to Applebee's for continuing to sponsor Tip A Cop and
supporting Special Olympics New Mexico.
Can we surpass our numbers
again? Join us on March 26, 2011 for Tip A Cop hosted by Red Robin.
Both Albuquerque Red Robin locations will be host to police
officers who will collect tips and all proceeds will benefit Special
Olympics New Mexico. Grab a group of friends and head over to Red Robin YUMMMM.

The nation’s Capitol Hill
had a taste of New Mexican flavor thanks to a visit from Special
Olympics New Mexico (SONM) athlete Desiree Romero.
On Wednesday, March 2nd,
Desiree joined her mother Maggie and representatives from Special
Olympics for a trip to Washington, D.C. to meet with U.S.
Congressmen Steve Pearce, Ben Ray Lujan and Martin Heinrich and
Senators Jeff Bingaman and Tom Udall. The group was there to
advocate for the Eunice Kennedy Shriver Act of 2011—a bill to
continue funding for Special Olympics’ health, education and
leadership programs.
Desiree joined over 225
Special Olympics athletes, Best Buddies International participants,
coaches, program leaders and family members across 43 states.
“Being involved in Special
Olympics is important to me because of the many opportunities inside
and outside of my sports training and competitions,” Desiree said to
the legislators. “I invite you to come join me and my fellow
Special Olympics athletes at a state competition and witness just
what we are capable of achieving.”
Desiree is the second SONM
athlete to participate in Capitol Hill Day. The first athlete was
SO Sandia Prep’s Abe Assaad, who attended with his mother Vickie in
2009.
