One Day Indoors

Last
Saturday, 163 Special Olympics athletes
met at the Albuquerque Convention Center
to compete in the Mayor’s Invitational
Indoor Track Meet. The Mondo Track is
one of the best indoor tracks in the
entire country, and for the second year
in a row, Special Olympics
athletes were given the opportunity to
run on it. It was a wonderful day for
everyone.
Reed Gallinger is a Special Olympics
athlete, who competed in the
running long jump, the 300 meter dash,
and the 400 meter dash. Reed is a very
good athlete, extremely humble, and
gives his best to whatever sport he
plays. Because of that, it’s always a
pleasure to watch him compete.

Spread the Word to
End the Word

On March 2, 2011 Special Olympics New Mexico will Spread the Word to End
the Word. The words “mental retardation” and “mentally retarded”
were originally used as clinical terms and were introduced with good
intentions. Now society is using these words to degrade and insult
people affected by intellectual disabilities. These words foster
exclusion, they are hurtful, they are derogatory, they are incorrect
and they are offensive. Every voice counts in Spreading the Word to
End the Word, here’s how you can get involved:
- Visit
www.R-Word.org to make your pledge to Spread the Word to End
the Word
- Host your own Spread the Word to End
the Word Event. Contact Victoria Gonzales at (505) 856-0342 or
victoriagonzales@sonm.org
When we all join together
in one voice, we can end exclusion, we can end hurt, we can end
loneliness. Together we can Spread the Word to End the Word.
Inspiring Nations
The bravery of athletes competing at World Games inspires
participating nations and bring much needed attention to the
conditions of people with intellectual disabilities within their
borders. At the same time, the World Games provide opportunity for
cross-cultural conversations about how to foster inclusion of people
with intellectual disabilities. Athletes, families, volunteers,
world leaders and Special Olympics celebrity ambassadors convene at
the Games to attend policy summits, exchange ideas and talk to the
public about the life-changing transformations Special Olympics
brings about in participants and communities
The World
Games are also catalysts for change within the countries that host
them. World Games stimulate local economies and create momentum for
citizen engagement by promoting grass-roots volunteerism- as seen in
Ireland during the 2003 World Games, when 30,000 people from across
the nation volunteered to work at Games in Dublin
