Editor's Note

Greetings SONM Fans and Happy Holidays!

As the year is wrapping up, we would like to sincerely thank all those who have played a role in help push our mission forward--providing year-round and statewide sports training and competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports to children and adults with intellectual disabilities.

On Wednesday, December 15th, SONM will be publishing the last SO Brief bi-weekly announcement blast of 2010, and will return to your inboxes on Wednesday, January 13, 2011.  Also on Dec. 15th we will be publishing our DEC/JAN issue of The Finish Line, our monthly newsletter that includes in-depth stories about our athletes, sports competitions, initiatives and special events.  If you don't already receive The Finish Line, click HERE to subscribe.

Again, a very special thank you to all our athletes, families, volunteers, donors and sponsors for another amazing year!

Thoughts from Randy - Blog

Attention.

A couple of weeks ago Special Olympics New Mexico met in Las Cruces for our 2010 Holiday Classic - a combination of our State Basketball Competition and South Regional Bowling Competition. I spent most of the morning watching basketball. During the course of a really close game, one of our athletes nailed a three-point shot, and I was immediately on my feet yelling with a lot of enthusiasm!

A dear friend sitting next to me who knew this young man kindly shared that what I just yelled wasn’t enough! As I looked at her with question marks in my eyes, she explained to me that she had cheered for this athlete during another game, and that after the game was over, he told her the next time she cheered for him, she needed to call out his name.

What gets a heart pumping and an empty belly rumbling?  It's our 2010 Posole Ole Fun Walk presented and hosted by the Albuquerque International Balloon Museum.  Join dozens of SONM families, friends and fans this Saturday, Dec. 4 for a morning of exercise, prizes, music and posole provided by El Pinto restaurant.

Many New Mexicans have already registered online, but it's not too late to get involved.  If you haven't already registered, that's okay! Day of event registration is also available.

Participants will walk the pathway around the museum, placing raffle tickets at drop-off points throughout the walk in hopes of winning prizes donated by local merchants. By doing so, participants are helping to raise money that will help over 2,500 SONM athletes train and compete in a variety of Olympic-type sports year-round.  Again, you can sign up today online at www.FirstGiving.com/SONM or simply show up day of event to participate.

Registration begins at 8:00 a.m., followed by the Fun Walk at 9:00 a.m. and the presentation of awards, prizes, music and posole at 10:00 a.m.  The Albuquerque International Balloon Museum located at 9201 Balloon Museum Drive.
