Applebee’s Tip-A-Cop raises over $17,000 for Special Olympics

On April 1st and 2nd, dozens of Law Enforcement Torch RunŽ (LETR)
officers and Applebee’s staff helped raise over $17,000 at the
biannual 2010 Applebee’s Tip-A-Cop fundraiser for SONM. The event
took place at participating Applebee’s locations around New Mexico,
including all seven Albuquerque locations, one Rio Rancho location
and two locations in Las Cruces.
“It’s inspiring to see our Applebee’s employees working and having
fun with Law Enforcement Torch Run officers to raise awareness and
funds for Special Olympics,” said Albuquerque Applebee’s Area
Director Tracy Ortiz. “The reason this partnership has such a
successful outcome is because we share LETR’s value on connecting
with people. Here at Applebee’s, our customers aren’t just
customers, but rather are our neighbors and our friends. We value
greatly the opportunity to meet and spend time with these athletes
and their amazing personalities. Some [SONM athletes] even turned
out to be better workers that night than our own staff.”
Tip-A-Cop events are a fundraising effort for Special Olympics that
partner Law Enforcement Torch Run officers with local restaurants.
“Words can’t express the gratitude we have for Applebee’s,” said
LETR State Director Doyle Syling. “Having Applebee’s as a community
partner with the Law Enforcement Torch Run and Special Olympics, and
the way they interact with officers, allows for this venue statewide
to be a success. They recognize the value of the individual person,
and because of their neighborhood philosophy, Applebee’s
successfully connects with Special Olympics’ families and local
programs.”
Cops and
Lobsters fund raiser a huge success in Farmington

On Friday, April 30 and Saturday, May 1, Special Olympics Area
1 athletes and Law Enforcement Torch Run officers hosted two Cops
and Lobsters fund raisers at the Red Lobster restaurant in
Farmington.
The event was a success as local Red Lobster patrons helped local
SONM athletes and LETR officers raise a total of
$14,453.
Thoughts
from Randy - Blog
Picking a
Theme.

Each year my staff labors over trying to pick a theme for the State
Summer Games. Finding something everyone can rally around and relate
to isn’t as easy as it sounds. We have in the past chosen the sport
of baseball, rock music, car racing, College Game Day, Hawaiian
shirts, and last year’s Ancient Games of the Olympiad (just to name
a few).
This year’s State Summer Games theme is “Celebrate New Mexico!” If
you don’t like it – sorry – it was my idea and this is why I chose
it. In my opinion – we have a lot to celebrate. Our diverse cultures
and costumes, our red and green chile, our vibrant colors, our
unique plants and animals, our mountains and deserts and caverns,
our stories and traditions, our patron saints and pottery, our hot
air balloons, our music and our dancers, our sports teams, our
sunrises and sunsets - there’s just a lot of great things that show
up each and every day to remind us that we live in an amazing place.
