Special Olympics San Juan County volunteer receives national honors for achievements
By Kristin Garcia

Caden Martin walks out onto the football field to be part of the coin toss at the start of the Aztec football game. He is joined by his co-captains on one side and his honorary captains on the other. These honorary captains are also award winning Special Olympics athletes, taking part in year round sports competitions. Applause begins throughout the crowd as the announcer introduces the honorary captains and the Special Olympics (SONM) events that they compete in.

Caden is one of four New Mexicans that have been awarded The 2010 Prudential Spirit of Community Award for his outstanding volunteer work done with Special Olympics New Mexico. He will be presented with a bronze medallion from Prudential Financial in May at his high school's senior award night. Caden also received the President's Volunteer Service Award for accumulating over 400 community service hours in 2009.

Thoughts from Randy - Blog

Noble Purpose

Words from our late founder, Eunice Kennedy Shriver:

"Despite all the progress of recent years, our special friends are still under threat. Some would rather eliminate them than improve their quality of life. Others would rather cut costs than create real opportunity. I ask you to stand up for people with intellectual disabilities for the rest of your lives. You may ask what good will come from this for ourselves? This is it. There is no joy like the joy of unleashing the human spirit. There is no laughter like the laughter of those who are happy with others. There is no purpose nobler than to build communities of acceptance for all."

Last Saturday morning 30 University of New Mexico football players volunteered to help with our inaugural Mayors Invitational Indoor Track Meet.

SONM needs your Travel Vouchers to help send athletes to National Games

This July, Special Olympics New Mexico will be sending 20 athletes and coaches to the 2010 Special Olympics National Games in Lincoln, Nebraska to compete in aquatics, track and field, bocce, bowling, golf and gymnastics.

Thanks to fans like you, SONM is able to provide the highest quality of sports experience to people with intellectual disabilities.  But now we need your help.  The cost of travel to National Games presents SONM with a huge financial challenge.  If anyone has Frequent Flyer coupons for airline tickets and/or travel vouchers, we ask that you please consider donating them to our National Games athletes and coaches so that they may experience the joy of sport at the national level and represent New Mexico.

Please contact Christine Sandoval at (505) 856 -0342 or email christinesandoval@sonm.org.  Thank you!
