Thoughts from Randy - Blog

Sport – Game – A Little Bit of Both

My grandmother weighed about 100 pounds, smoked like a steam engine, and in my mind’s eye wasn’t exactly “athletic,” but the woman could flat out bowl. She had a closet full of bowling shirts, bowling shoes in a variety of colors, and two bowling balls, which she carried in beautiful leather bags. She bowled in a league and cherished her “bowling night” like no other night of the week.

Value of volunteering makes SONM family stronger
By Amanda Ortiz

A feeling of goose-bumps running down the body might be the best way to describe the sensation Special Olympics New Mexico volunteer Donna Rios experiences while watching SONM athletes compete at their finest.

Not only is Rios a volunteer, but is also the mother of SO Santa Fe athlete Jose Rios, who currently competes in three of the 12 SONM sports: poly hockey, golf and softball. Rios is often joined her husband Rudy and daughter Consuelo, who among other things, serve as Jose’s main cheerleaders during competitions.

Education Station - Six ways to promote your special event / fund raiser

  1. Reach out to newspapers, TV, and radio with a phone call or letter announcing your event and all the fun details.  Invite reporters to get involved in someway (e.g. event emcee, autograph signings, etc.)

  2. Print and distribute flyers everywhere you can (e.g. local businesses, town hall meetings, etc.)

  3. Invite influential people to attend, and ask them to extend the invitation to more people they know.

  4. Reach out to all your families, volunteers and fan with all the details and ask them to spread the work.  Also, contact members of other organizations who support your cause.

  5. Use the power of online communication.  Write an email explaining the who, what, where, when and especially the why, to a friend asking him or her to come to the event.   Ask them to forward your message via email, facebook, and twitter (you'll need to keep your message under about 50 words).  If they have a website, ask them to post the news there as well.

  6. Use past photos and videos (if available) to help communicate the emotional impact of your event.  You can use online video and photo sharing sites, such as YouTube and Flickr to help promote your event this year and next year.

For more ways to promote activities going on in your local area, contact Oscar Solis at oscarsolis@sonm.org.
