Over The Edge for SONM raises over $60,000 in its first year

On September 24th and 25th Special Olympics New Mexico hosted one of Albuquerque’s most exhilarating fund raising events of all time: the first annual Over The Edge for Special Olympics presented by BKG Properties.

This one-of-a-kind adventure involved an exclusive 16-story (230 ft.) rappel down the New Mexico Bank and Trust building in downtown Albuquerque, with over 40 rappelling participants, who each raised a minimum of $1,000 to go over the edge, for a total of $63,775 raised in the event’s first year.

Thoughts from Randy - Blog

I Never Looked Down

So let me start by saying going Over the Edge is now ranking right up there as one of the most amazing things I have ever done in my life. I’m not kidding. From the moment I put on the helmet and was strapped into the harness – I was in an altered state.

Simply walking onto the roof was beyond words, but having to take that single step off the top from a backwards position – take charge of the rope that dictated the pace of the sixteen story downward rapel – and on the way down attempt to wrap my head around what I was thinking and feeling - WHEW.

Tip a Cop statewide fund raisers combine for more than $40,000

On Friday, October 2nd The New Mexico Law Enforcement Torch Run Executive Committee met in Albuquerque to discuss fund raising strategies for 2010.  It was there the total amount raised from the semiannual Applebee's Tip-a-Cop fund raiser reached more than $40,000 for the athletes of Special Olympics.

This year, dozens of law enforcement officers in Albuquerque, Rio Rancho and Santa Fe joined SONM athletes at participating Applebee's restaurants to raise awareness of SONM's mission and raise funds for athlete equipment and sports competition costs.  On Thursday, October 22nd LETR officers in Las Cruces will hold their own Applebee's Tip a Cop event.  For more information, contact Jacqueline Campo at (505) 856-0342 or visit www.sonm.org.
