The time has come to go Over The Edge

It's here. This Thursday, Sept. 24 and Friday, Sept. 25,
Special Olympics New Mexico will host its most exhilarating fund
raiser of all time: a 14 story rappel down the New Mexico Bank and
Trust Building in downtown Albuquerque. Dozens of
adventure-seekers of various ages have signed up and prepared for
what will be a one-of-a-kind opportunity to support Special
Olympics.
Thursday, Sept. 24th is Media Day starting at 12pm, where a handful
of local celebrities and popular media personalities will kick off
the Over The Edge rappel. Then on Friday, Sept. 25th from 9am
to 5pm, registered participants, who have raised at least $1,000,
will demonstrate their courage down 203 feet and in front of
hundreds of people looking on. Over The Edge will take place
at the same time as the Albuquerque Downtown Arts Festival.
Want to go
Over The Edge? There is still a few rappel time slots
open for Friday afternoon for any "day-of" adventure seekers.
Visit the registration table on Sept. 24th or 25th on the fourth
floor of the New Mexico Bank and Trust building to participate.
The cost to rappel is $1,000, which includes a memorable Over The
Edge t-shirt.

Thoughts from Randy - Blog
“Are You Out of Your Mind?!”

Those would be the words my mother spoke when I told her that this
Friday I will be repelling down a sixteen story building to raise
money for Special Olympics New Mexico. “How can I not do it, Mom -
it’s for our athletes.” I spoke those words with conviction, hung up
the phone, and broke into a cold sweat. The truth is, a few weeks
ago the idea of Going Over the Edge didn’t really bother me. Now
that we are three days out, I am starting to spend sleepless nights
wondering how I’m going to be.

Equestrian athletes ride high in new venue for the
2009 State Equestrian Competition

He has a great sense of humor, speaks with a distinctive drawl in
his voice, and his brain is an encyclopedia on equestrian
competitions. His name is Bill Cotton, and for more than 24 years he
has been the voice of Special Olympics New Mexico’s State Equestrian
Competition, which took place in Clovis on September 18 and 19.
But Cotton is just one of many traditions that, year after year,
make equestrian such a unique sport for SONM’s athletes. Though the
most obvious experience being the dynamics of the horse and rider
partnership—both equestrian athletes and fans were also witness this
year to a new and improved arena, a larger number of athletes and a
weekend of fun and competition.
“I’m always amazed of the things our equestrian athletes have to do
when they are on their horses,” says SONM Executive Director Randy
Mascorella. “To have to memorize patterns and demonstrate good
riding form, all while keeping track of their time. I mean, it’s one
thing to walk onto a basketball court, but to earn the trust of a
horse is just amazing.”
