SONM mourns the loss of founder Eunice Kennedy Shriver

Eunice Kennedy Shriver died early the morning of Aug. 11, 2009, at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis, Mass., surrounded by her family. She was 88 years old. The younger sister of President John Fitzgerald Kennedy, Shriver was the founder and honorary chairperson of Special Olympics, and executive vice president of the Joseph P. Kennedy, Jr. Foundation. She has been a leader in the worldwide movement to improve and to enhance the lives of individuals with intellectual disabilities for more than six decades.

“Unlike many other nonprofit organizations, Special Olympics, Inc. has had the benefit of having their founder highly involved since the organization’s inception,” says Special Olympics New Mexico Executive Director Randy Mascorella. “Words can not really do justice describing forty-one years of Mrs. Shriver’s passion, leadership, and vision. She lived and breathed to create a better life for people challenged with intellectual disabilities. Most of us only hope that during our lifetime we are able to impact our corner of the world. Eunice Kennedy Shriver changed the entire world through the Special Olympics movement, and to say that she will be missed is painfully understated.”

Thoughts from Randy

God's Workmanship - Mrs. Eunice Kennedy Shriver

I'm sitting here trying to figure out what words I can possibly say to adequately describe Mrs. Eunice Kennedy Shriver's contribution to our world. How can we begin to honor her life "enough" for all that she did to bring dignity, celebration, and hope to over three million Special Olympics athletes and their families?

See who's fund raising to go Over The Edge for Special Olympics

It has begun.  With the arrival of one of Albuquerque's most unique fund raising events just around the corner, SONM fans are busy raising dollars to either send themselves or someone of their choosing--Over The Edge for Special Olympics New Mexico.

Over the Edge for SONM is a 14-story rappel (203-ft) down the New Mexico Bank and Trust building located at 320 Gold SW in downtown Albuquerque on Friday, Sept. 25 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00p.m.  Each individual will need to raise $1,000 to participate. All proceeds will go to benefit SONM’s athletes and year-round, statewide sports program.
