Maybe it was in some way related to the economy. Maybe it was President Obama's service directive to the American people. Or maybe it had nothing to do with either of those. For whatever the reason, this year Special Olympics New Mexico not only had more athletes than ever before at our State Summer Games - we also had a record number of volunteers.

SONM softball, aquatics and golf season kicks off
 
On June 6th, the 2009 season of Special Olympics New Mexico's Four Corners Invitational opened across the state as delegations from all six SONM areas quickly regrouped from an exciting Summer Games.
 
This year's state unified softball, aquatics and golf competitions will return to Farmington on July 31 through Aug. 2.  Competition will take place at the San Juan Country Club, San Juan Aquatics Center and Rickett's Field.

Register today for the 2009 Golf Classic and Sports Auction for Special Olympics New Mexico
 
The Special Olympics Golf Classic and Sports Auction  is an annual fundraising event that features honorary guest, UNM's Coach Steve Alford, and brings together local golfers and community sponsors in an effort to raise money for the athletes of Special Olympics New Mexico.
 
In 2008, the Golf Classic raised more than $100,000 for Special Olympics New Mexico. Over 52 registered teams participated in the event.
 
Hosted by Four Hills Country Club in Albuquerque, the 2009 Golf Classic will include a live & silent sports auction and dinner on Sunday, July 19 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., followed by a double shotgun golf tournament on Monday, July 20 with tee times available at 7:30 a.m. or 1:00 p.m.
 
The 2009 Golf Classic and Sports Auction is presented by The Payroll Company, Inc, with additional support from The Manuel Lujan Agencies and UNM Athletics.

LETR Bike Rally set for June 20th
 
On Saturday, June 20, The Law Enforcement Torch for Special Olympics will hold its 2009 Bike Rally, which will include a Mass Ride Out from the Journal Pavilion at 5601 University Blvd. SE beginning at 10:30 a.m. All riders will proceed to Los Ojos
Restaurant & Saloon on Highway 4 in Jemez Springs.
 
Registration will take place at the Journal Pavilion from 9:00 am - 10:30 a.m. Cost of Pre-Registration is $20—$30 will include a memorable 2009 LETR Bike Rally T-shirt. Deadline to pre-register is Saturday, June 13th. Day of Event Registration costs include $25—$35 will include a memorable 2009 LETR Bike Rally T-shirt. The event will include free music, food & additional entertainment.

Special Olympics Honored with Keys to the City of Boise, Idaho, for Tremendous Gift to Community through the 2009 Special Olympics World Winter

Boise, Idaho – Wednesday, at a private event, Mayor David Bieter presented Brady Lum, President and COO of Special Olympics, Chip Fisher, Chairman and CEO of the 2009 World Games Organizing Committee (GOC), and several Special Olympics athletes each with a Key to the City of Boise, Idaho, in recognition of the tremendous gift the 2009 Special Olympics World Winter Games were to the local community in February.

Special Olympics was presented with a key for its “vision, determination and resourcefulness” in bringing the World Games to Idaho. The GOC was honored with a key for its “talent, tenacity and courage” that touched the hearts and lifted the spirits of Boise residents. And Mayor Bieter presented a key to Special Olympics athletes for their “bravery, perseverance and athletic skills” that served as an inspiration for all.

Special Olympics has 100 Isotopes tickets to give away thanks to sponsor Bank of America
 
Special Olympics New Mexico sponsor Bank of America has chosen SONM as its Community Recognition Day partner. As a result, BOA is providing SONM athletes, friends and families with 100 Isotopes baseball tickets for their home game against Nashville on Friday, June 26th at 7:05 p.m.
 
Tickets are available on a first come, first serve basis and can be picked up at the Special Olympics New Mexico chapter office at 6600 Palomas Place NE, suite 207 (on the corner of Paseo Del Norte and San Pedro) from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. SONM will not mail tickets.
