Applebee’s Tip-A-Cop on pace for breaking last year’s fund raising record

On Thursday, March 19, over 70 Law Enforcement Torch RunŽ (LETR) officers from around New Mexico traded their guns for aprons for an evening of service and education during the 2009 Applebee’s Tip-A-Cop biannual fund raiser for Special Olympics.

LETR officers joined dozens of Special Olympics New Mexico (SONM) athletes at more than eight Applebee’s locations in Albuquerque, Rio Rancho and Las Cruces to help raise funds and awareness for SONM’s athletes and sports program.

Thoughts from Randy

FAN OF FUN

Last week I took my mom and dad to Tip-A-Cop at Applebee’s. It was a great fund-raiser, an even greater friend-raiser, but most of all, it was really, really, fun. I laughed my head off watching and listening to my 80 year old parents laugh like they were kids. The officers were laughing, our athletes were laughing , and all of the patrons were laughing. I couldn’t stop watching the expressions of those who came in thinking they were simply going to Applebee’s to have dinner, and I couldn’t stop thinking about how perceptions and stereotypes were being changed right in front of our faces, largely because people were simply having fun. Here’s the deal.

2009 State Summer Games season now open, SONM chooses Greek theme

On March 14, Special Olympics New Mexico announced the season kick off of the
MMIX State Summer Games of the Olympiad slated for May 29 - 31 in Albuquerque.

For the next eight to ten weeks, hundreds of SONM athletes and coaches will develop their skills in either Track and Field, Bocce, Cycling, Gymnastics or Unified Volleyball.

And don't forget to catch local Law Enforcement Torch Run officers in your area.  From May 18 - 29 hundreds of Law Enforcement Torch Run officers will cover 1,600 miles carrying the Flame of Hope throughout New Mexico and ending in Albuquerque for the Final Leg run into the Summer Games Opening Ceremonies.

Whether you're currently a fan of Special Olympics or looking to get involved, visit the SONM website for more Summer Games updates, news, forms and resources.

Don't forget to help Special Olympics feed the hungry!  SONM is collecting canned food and dry goods at each of its five state competitions and delivering the items collected to local food kitchens.  Some 900 pounds of food was collected at our 2009 Poly Hockey Championships in February.  Let's keep it up!
