SONM’s
Poly Hockey grows as it goes

As SONM heads into the home stretch of the 2009 State Poly Hockey
Championships, here are a few amazing statistics to share that
defines what's to be expected this weekend. This year, Roswell will
welcome 338 Poly Hockey players (up 106 athletes from 2008), 104
coaches (up 29 from 2008), and 19 officials (up four from 2008).
The increase in athletes, coaches and officials not only means
remarkable growth, but sets the stage for what's expected to be a
spectacular weekend filled with tough competition, teamwork,
courage, determination, families and friendships.
Additionally, Games Management officials announced some 1,650 meals
will be served over the course of the two-day tournament. Our
ability to do this is in large part thanks to the following Poly
Hockey sponsors: Legacy Church, Armstrong Energy Corporation, Ryder
Truck, Fritolay, South West Dairy Farmers, Coca Cola, United
Drilling, Inc., ENM State Fair, City of Roswell, Church on the Move,
AmeriPride, Esparanza Developmental Services, and Goddard High
School.
SONM wishes all our athletes, families, and volunteers a fun and
joyous Games this weekend. Thank you for being a fan of Special
Olympics.
Save the
date for the 2009 Applebee's Tip-A-Cop fundraiser for SONM

On Thursday, March 19 dozens of Law Enforcement Officers and Special
Olympics New Mexico (SONM) athletes will put on the aprons for
Applebee’s patrons for the 2009 Tip-A-Cop fundraiser for SONM.
The event will take place at participating Applebee’s locations
around New Mexico, including all seven Albuquerque locations, one
Rio Rancho location and two locations in Las Cruces—all from 5:00
p.m.-9:00 p.m.
Tip-A-Cop events are a fundraising effort for Special Olympics that
partner Law Enforcement Torch Run officers with local restaurants.
This year each officer will show their generosity by teaming up with
a regular waiter or waitress from Applebee’s restaurants to wait
tables. During their waiting services, the officers will educate the
customers about the fundraising event and about Special Olympics.
Their messages hope to encourage communities to be a fan of
empowerment and of character. In educating the customers about SONM,
the officers will solicit “tips” as donations to SONM. These “tips”
to the officers will be separated from those given to regular wait
staff. A second statewide Tip-A-Cop event will occur on Thursday,
Oct. 22, 2009.

Wells
Fargo presents SONM with $20,000 at LETR Kick Off

More than one hundred law enforcement officers, SONM athletes and
sponsors launched another hopeful year of raising funds and
awareness for Special Olympics at the 2009 Law Enforcement Torch Run
Kick Off on Friday, Feb. 20 at Wells Fargo in downtown Albuquerque.
The meeting began with a press conference announcing Wells Fargo’s
return as presenting sponsor of the Law Enforcement Torch Run for
Special Olympics. Wells Fargo Senior Vice President Bruce Beebe
presented SONM Executive Director Randy Mascorella with a check for
$20,000.
“The Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics New Mexico
embodies the spirit of giving and passion for our community,” said
Beebe. “Wells Fargo is honored to have a legacy partnering with our
dedicated law enforcement officers, who work tremendously, to
enhance the lives of people with intellectual disabilities and their
families.”
Additional comments were made from LETR State Director Doyle Syling
and UNM Head Football Coach Mike Locksley. The program included a
speech writing workshop for attending LETR officers and SONM
athletes with Toastmaster and local SONM embroider Todd Martinez of
Albuquerque’s EmbroidMe.

“Many Voices - Single Heart” - Healthy Athletes

They gather selflessly three times a year to do whatever they can
within those three days to improve the over-all health of our
athletes. They come from a variety of health disciplines, and they
take their time with us very seriously. They are Special Olympics
New Mexico’s volunteer health professionals, who make our Healthy
Athletes Initiative unarguably one of the best in the country. So,
what does that mean, and why does Healthy Athletes matter?

courageous story with 100.3 FM The Peak

[Albuquerque, NM] - On Thursday, February 26, turn your radio dial
to 100.3 The Peak and catch Special Olympics San Juan County athlete
Steffan Hobbs as he helps kick off the annual Radiothon to benefit
the University of New Mexico Children’s Hospital with his own
inspirational story.
Steffan and his parents, Janet and Jim, were asked to share
Steffan’s story of before, during and after his visit to the UNM
Children's Hospital for injuries suffered when Steffan was younger.
This will be third consecutive year the Hobbs family have shared
their story live on-air to Peak listeners.
“We’re doing this to show our thanks to the UNM Children’s Hospital
for saving our son's life,” said Janet.
Afterward, the three will make their way down to Roswell so Steffan
can join his Special Olympics San Juan County teammates for the 2009
SONM State Poly Hockey Championships in Roswell.
Bring your dry and canned foods at all of
SONM's State Competitions and help the hungry
As many athletes know, it’s hard to play when you don’t have the
nutrition. That’s why Special Olympics New Mexico is asking for your
help to curb hunger.
Join Special Olympics New Mexico’s drive to feed the hungry by
bringing both dry and canned foods to every 2009 SONM State
Competition. The dry and canned food will be collected and
distributed to local food banks in the Albuquerque, Clovis,
Farmington, Las Cruces and Roswell areas where our State Games will
be held. Mark your calendars for a “Games” near you and help us
strengthen our community.
