SONM
volunteers honored by Albuquerque Mayor Martin Chavez

On February 4, 2009, Cassie and Amanda Dickey, both volunteers with
the Special Olympics Curley Key Riders equestrian club, were honored
by Albuquerque Mayor Martin Chavez for their services to Special
Olympics.
The two SONM supporters were presented the “MOVE UP” award, an honor
given to individuals for their outstanding service to the
Albuquerque community. Over the past couple of years, the twin
sisters have provide hundreds of hours of volunteering service for
Special Olympics Equestrian events. The ceremony took place at the
Albuquerque Museum.
“Not many teenagers are that dedicated and we would be lost without
these girls and their dedication,” said Curley Keys coach June
Story. “This is a really great program and we were glad we could
nominate our exceptional volunteers.”
MOVE (Mayor's Office on Volunteerism and Engagement) promotes and
supports effective volunteerism, serves as a resource and
coordination center for volunteers, and works as a catalyst in
building coalitions and community partnerships. The Dickey sisters
were nominated for the award by SONM coaches Carrie Schwartz and
June Storey.
Save the
date for the 2009 Applebee's Tip-A-Cop fundraiser for SONM

On Thursday, March 19 dozens of Law Enforcement Officers and Special
Olympics New Mexico (SONM) athletes will put on the aprons for
Applebee’s patrons for the 2009 Tip-A-Cop fundraiser for SONM.
The event will take place at participating Applebee’s locations
around New Mexico, including all seven Albuquerque locations, one
Rio Rancho location and two locations in Las Cruces—all from 5:00
p.m.-9:00 p.m.
Tip-A-Cop events are a fundraising effort for Special Olympics that
partner Law Enforcement Torch Run officers with local restaurants.
This year each officer will show their generosity by teaming up with
a regular waiter or waitress from Applebee’s restaurants to wait
tables. During their waiting services, the officers will educate the
customers about the fundraising event and about Special Olympics.
Their messages hope to encourage communities to be a fan of
empowerment and of character. In educating the customers about SONM,
the officers will solicit “tips” as donations to SONM. These “tips”
to the officers will be separated from those given to regular wait
staff. A second statewide Tip-A-Cop event will occur on Thursday,
Oct. 22, 2009.

Thoughts
from Randy

To the SONM Board of Directors,
There have been several people in our community as of late who have
said to me, “Randy, you have a really good Board.” I’m not quite
sure what they used to make that evaluation, but the truth is I
think they’re right. Special Olympics New Mexico does have a really
good Board, and I’ve decided to use my Thoughts to tell all of my
Board members, and everyone else who is reading this, why.

Area Poly
Hockey Games take place throughout New Mexico
This past weekend, all five SONM Area Poly Hockey Games (Area 6
currently does not participate in Poly Hockey) came to a close as
hundreds of SONM athletes across the state banged sticks, pucks and
their bodies.
The Area Games marks the half-way point to the 2009 State Poly
Hockey Championships on February 27-28 in Roswell where some 500
athletes, coaches, volunteers and family members will descend upon
the famous Alien town.

Bring your dry and canned foods at all of
SONM's State Competitions and help the hungry
As many athletes know, it’s hard to play when you don’t have the
nutrition. That’s why Special Olympics New Mexico is asking for your
help to curb hunger.
Join Special Olympics New Mexico’s drive to feed the hungry by
bringing both dry and canned foods to every 2009 SONM State
Competition. The dry and canned food will be collected and
distributed to local food banks in the Albuquerque, Clovis,
Farmington, Las Cruces and Roswell areas where our State Games will
be held. Mark your calendars for a “Games” near you and help us
strengthen our community.
