Partnership with UNM announced in front of thousands of cheering Lobo fans

After posing for pictures with fellow Special Olympics New Mexico athletes and board of director members in the middle of the basketball court at the Pit during a halftime presentation announcing SONM's partnership with the University of New Mexico, athlete Ryan Hanson of Farmington turned around and kissed the Lobo logo on the floor.  His act drew a large roar from the crowd of cheering Lobo fans, and symbolized the strengthening of an already remarkable relationship.

Thoughts from Randy

Can you remember your childhood days of hiding in a closet? Once you closed the door you couldn’t see a thing. If your fear got the best of you and you even barely cracked it open, you suddenly felt different. Through that tiny crack your darkness changed to light.

Special Olympics Las Cruces athletes and coaches honored at New Mexico State University women's basketball game

On Sunday, Jan. 18 the New Mexico State University Aggies honored dozens of SONM athletes and coaches during a women's basketball halftime presentation that included a Special Olympics basketball scrimmage in front of cheering fans.

Some 23 SONM athletes, along with five coaches waved at their fellow Aggies fans as their names were listed over the PA system.  The athletes then broke out into a short scrimmage, displaying their individual and team basketball skills.  After the scrimmage, SONM Area 3 Director and coach Ronda Norfleet was presented with an autographed game ball.

"We were honored to have Special Olympics New Mexico with us this weekend," said Chris Grosse, an NMSU representative. "I hope this can become a tradition for us. It was a pleasure honoring these athletes during the game."

Bring your dry and canned foods at all of SONM's State Competitions and help the
hungry

As many athletes know, it’s hard to play when you don’t have the nutrition. That’s why Special Olympics New Mexico is asking for your help to curb hunger.

Join Special Olympics New Mexico’s drive to feed the hungry by bringing both dry and canned foods to every 2009 SONM State Competition. The dry and canned food will be collected and distributed to local food banks in the Albuquerque, Clovis, Farmington, Las Cruces and Roswell areas where our State Games will be held. Mark your calendars for a “Games” near you and help us strengthen our community.
