Welcome back, SO
Brief Readers
Happy New Year! As 2009 gets underway, Special Olympics New
Mexico is back in action for another year of life-improving sports,
athletes, family and fun.
Here's a peek at what's new in 2009:
Over The Edge - Keep your eyes and ears open for this
adventurous event later this fall. More details will be
unveiled soon.
Thoughts from Randy Blog - SONM Executive Director Randy
Mascorella is going "2.0" with the start of a new blog, offering the
opportunity for readers to provide quick feedback and possible
discussion items.
Coming back for more:
The Law Enforcement Torch Run - New Mexico LETR officers are
looking to beat their fundraising record set last year at just over
$250,000 raised for SONM. Their 2009 Kick Off Conference is
scheduled for Feb. 20th in Albuquerque.
Global Messengers - Last year, SONM trained 20 SONM athletes
and partners how to write, present and evaluate speeches about their
experience in Special Olympics. This year, dozens of athletes
will join the ranks as official speakers of the Special Olympics
movement. Look for a Global Messenger training in your area.
Athletes
put the pads back on as the SONM Poly Hockey season re-opens

In Poly Hockey, a game is not allowed to start until the official
shouts “sticks,” signaling for every player in the hockey rink to
confirm their focus by slapping their sticks on the ground. Once
everyone bangs their blades down, the official’s whistle is blown
and the excitement of a hockey game begins.
On Saturday, January 3, the 2009 Special Olympics New Mexico (SONM)
Poly Hockey season opened—ending a long awaited start to one of
SONM’s most exciting State Games. Poly Hockey is played with teams
of five players on each side of the rink; composing of three
forwards, two defensemen and a goalie. A center line (usually marked
by tape) divides the rink into two halves preventing defensemen from
entering their own offensive zone and offensive players from
entering their own defensive zone. Only center-forwards, who are
identified by using a fully striped hockey stick, can pursue pucks
on either side of the center line—making for a fast paced
three-on-three game on either half of the rink.
As with every State Games, each team trains from eight to ten weeks
prior to the State Tournament. This year’s Poly Hockey Championships
will take place in Roswell on February 27 and 28. As SONM athletes
strap on the pads to prepare for another season of great shots,
beauty passes, and sweet goalie-saves, SONM would like to take this
time to get all of our fans ready for the 2009 season of sports,
family and friendship: Sticks.
Don’t wait any longer, sign up today and be a fan of Special
Olympics. Visit www.sonm.org or call (505) 856-0342 to see how you
can get involved.
UNM Lobos
and SONM team up to raise awareness for people with intellectual
disabilities

Special Olympics New Mexico is extending its reach in the sports
community thanks to an upcoming partnership with the University of
New Mexico Athletics Department.
During halftime at the men’s basketball game on Saturday, January 17
the Lobos will announce plans for 2009 to help Special Olympics New
Mexico raise funds and awareness for people with intellectual
disabilities.
Join other SONM athletes, families and friends as we celebrate this
new partnership at the Pit this Saturday at 2:00 p.m. The Lobos will
be taking on BYU. To purchase your tickets call (505) 925 – LOBO or
visit www.golobos.cstv.com.
It’s hard
to play when you’re hungry
As many athletes know, it’s hard to play when you don’t have the
nutrition. That’s why Special Olympics New Mexico is asking for your
help to curb hunger.
Join Special Olympics New Mexico’s drive to feed the hungry by
bringing canned foods to every 2009 SONM State Competition. The
canned food will be collected and distributed to local food banks in
the Albuquerque, Clovis, Farmington, Las Cruces and Roswell areas
where our State Games will be held. Mark your calendars for a
“Games” near you and help us strengthen our community.

Please bring canned food items only. For more information call
Special Olympics New Mexico at (505) 856-0342.
Thoughts
from Randy
I’ve been thinking a lot about how many opportunities we as people
have to “change our corner of the world.” Whether we make the
decision to give of our time or donate our hard earned cash, there
are many needs out there. By doing our part to fill them, I believe
deep inside we experience a sense of greater meaning and purpose.
Although I refuse to dwell on it, today’s economy is certainly on
everyone’s mind, and we are all feeling its impact in one way or
another.
