Passion
will keep athlete warm in Idaho
The Global Law Enforcement Torch RunŽ for Special Olympics for
the 2009 Special Olympics World Winter Games
When SONM athlete Van Pexa heard his name announced during the 2008
Law Enforcement Torch Run International Conference in Dallas earlier
this year, he knew it meant one thing: he was going to represent New
Mexico in the Law Enforcement Torch Run Final Leg at the 2009
Special Olympics World Winter Games in Boise Idaho.
"I don't' know who was more excited, he or I," said LETR State
Director Doyle Syling.
Van will be joining fellow Final Leg runners Lt. Robert Miller of
the Belen Police Department, and Syling, who was selected to serve
as a Team Leader.
"I'm very happy to get to run with all the police officers," said
Pexa. "I've been practicing by running for about 18 minutes
everyday."
Pexa was one of ten Special Olympics athletes selected from a pool
of 25 nominations to run in the Final Leg.
"He is thrilled to death," said Dana Pexa, Van's mother. "He
has taken his appointment to the LETR Executive Committee very
seriously and with great passion. I don't think he minds that
it will be below 40 degrees out there."
On November 12, 2008, the Special Olympics Flame of Hope was lit in
Athens, Greece to commence a three-month journey across five
continents delivering hope, courage and inspiration to Special
Olympics athletes worldwide.
The flame will stop in 10 cities around the world and be transported
more than 60,000 kilometers (37,000 miles) by DHL, the Official
Transporter of the Flame of Hope for the 2009 Special Olympics World
Winter Games. At each stop the Flame will be carried by teams of law
enforcement personnel, Special Olympics athletes and volunteers.
On 28 January 2009 the Flame of Hope will reach Idaho, USA, and
begin the Final Leg of the Global Law Enforcement Torch Run. It will
reach Boise, Idaho on 7 February 2009 and be used to light the
Cauldron to mark the official beginning of the 2009 Special Olympics
World Winter Games.
