SONM fans
raise $21,000 at 2008 Posole Ole Fun Walk

On Saturday, December 6, SONM athletes, families, and fans raised
$21,000 for the 2008 Posole Ole Fun Walk. The event was
presented by and held at the Albuquerque International Balloon Museum.
Hundreds of walkers filled the circular pathway outside the Museum
led by Santa Clause himself, while members of the Optimist Club
prepared and served warm Posole provided by El Pinto Restaurant.
Awards were given to high fundraising groups and individuals and
giveaways were awarded to winners of Fun Walk raffle. As the
Walk to a close a handful of athletes spoke with news reporters
outside.
Special Olympics New Mexico would like to thank everyone who helped
make another successful Posole Ole Fun Walk. Special thanks
goes to the sponsors of the Walk: Albuquerque International Balloon
Museum, Ameriplex Mortgage, Rio Vista Realty Inc., and 99.5 FM KMGA.

Local sports
broadcaster Mike Roberts honored amid his biggest fans

Inside a Sandia Resort and Casino ballroom stood legendary New
Mexico sports broadcaster Mike Roberts, surrounded by big-time
admirers and fans of who many consider the "voice" of New Mexico
sports.
On Tuesday, December 9th, hundreds of sports fans and Special
Olympics supporters honored Roberts for his commitment and passion
to sports during SONM's Olympic Spirit of Dedication Awards Banquet.
The banquet included comments from SONM Board of Director chairman
Tom Padilla, and SONM Executive Director Randy Mascorella, along
with a humorous Q and A session with SONM athlete Tim Harris of
Albuquerque. At the close of the event, SONM presented Roberts
with a check in support of horse rescue groups. Roberts told
Harris during the Q and A that he himself owns 17 horses.
Special
Olympics families are always there for one another

Danielle Esquibel knows the value of a strong and loving family. For
20 years the Special Olympics New Mexico athlete has been training
and competing in a number of Olympic-type sports with her mother,
Karen, and younger sister, Anita, along for each step of the way.
“The three of us have always been attached at the hip,” Karen
Esquibel said. “Special Olympics has given us a chance to celebrate
together, as a family.”
Danielle, 28, began her participation in Special Olympics at eight
years old with the then existing Special Olympics Chaparral
delegation. She trained and competed in Track and Field and in
Aquatics at both the local and state levels, earning many medals and
making tons of friends.

Special Olympics coach earns national recognition as one of Special
Olympics’ 40 Exemplary Coaches

Special Olympics, Inc., Special Olympics New Mexico’s (SONM) parent
organization, has named SONM coach Christine Castillo as one of
Special Olympics’ 40 Exemplary Coaches for 2008. Castillo was among
the global movement’s top coaches who were honored in the current
issue of Special Olympics’ Spirit Magazine (Fall 2008).
“My biggest reward, I feel, is being a part of these athletes’ lives
and have the privilege of seeing them grow and develop in their
sport skills regardless how small the achievement might be,”
Castillo told Spirit Magazine.

Thoughts
from Randy

Years ago, I called Sports Illustrated and cancelled my
subscription, because they were of the opinion that women’s sports
weren’t popular enough to warrant coverage. I loved the magazine,
and it about killed me to cancel. When I started working for Special
Olympics and attended my first Special Olympics World Games, I got
bugged all over again - Sports Illustrated was no where to be found.
The good news is that if you wait long enough in the world of sport,
attitudes eventually change. If you haven’t already, I would
encourage you to purchase S.I.’s December 8th issue. The cover has a
picture of Michael Phelps, soaking wet, dressed in a suit and tie.
In this issue Sports Illustrated honors Eunice Kennedy Shriver with
the Sportsman of the Year Legacy Award “for a life dedicated to the
ideals of sportsmanship.” There is a TWELVE PAGE article on Special
Olympics entitled “Small Steps, GREAT STRIDES.” It’s superb.
