Tax Relief Act provides SONM senior supporters opportunity to donate and save

As we join in the burden of these tough economic times, the need to invest in our athletes and sports programs grows heavier. Special Olympics New Mexico (SONM) would like to remind our senior supporters how you can continue to donate to SONM while putting money back in your savings.

The Tax Extenders and Alternative Minimum Tax Relief Act of 2008, which was enacted on Oct. 3, 2008, extends several expired charitable giving tax breaks for 2008 and 2009, which includes the IRA charitable rollover.

This provision allows individuals aged 70 1/2 and older to donate up to $100,000 from their individual retirement accounts (IRAs) and Roth IRAs to public charities without having to count the distributions as taxable income. This giving incentive is particularly beneficial to those individuals who do not itemize their tax deductions and would not otherwise receive any tax benefit for their charitable contributions.

For more information about donating to Special Olympics New Mexico call Christine Sandoval at (505) 856-0342.

Thoughts from Randy

It is that time again when as a statewide organization we submit candidates for this year’s Special Olympics New Mexico Distinguished Service Awards. We began presenting these awards about thirteen years ago, and although to my knowledge the winners have never appeared in the headlines of any newspaper, nor their stories told on the evening news, in my opinion, they should have.

The word “distinguished” is defined as standing above and is characterized by excellence. Standing above and serving with excellence is a choice any one of us can make and the truth is many do.
