Florida Keys Outfitters Newsletter
Greetings!

After a mild Florida Keys winter, March pranced in like a lamb and roared out like a lion... the lion roared through early April as well blowing 20 or 25 miles an hour on many days. The good news is that most days came with plenty of sunshine and for good fly casters and light tackle anglers fishing was excellent overall! Redfish continue to be abundant on the flats and in the channels.

The Keys' full time resident tarpon are now being joined by the spring migratory tarpon in large numbers making for some really great fishing. These fresh arriving fish are beginning to move the flats on both sides of Highway US 1 and they are floating in the lakes of Florida Bay. Plan ahead and be prepared to enjoy several months of this spectacular migration!

Bonefishing has been sporadic with strings of mediocre days punctuated by some banner days. Overall the trend seems to be somewhat better than the past few years. Veteran angler Craig Reagor of Ponte Vedra Beach treated one of his daughters, Stephanie to a day of bonefishing with Capt Dave Denkert and she releases her largest bonefish ever. Recently, Islamorada Angler, Paul Nute caught a couple jumbo bonefish with fly on back to back days!

Sandy's Angling Tip of the Month

Presenting the fly is more than just a pretty tight loop! Presenting is placing the fly in a position in which the fish senses the offering as easy prey. Of course it starts with your cast which depending on surrounding conditions of wind, current and sunlight may require a tight loop, a more open loop or something in between. The fly should appear harmless and nonthreatening to the fish. After all, who wants to eat something if it hurts? The fly should seem easy for the fish to catch without expending more energy than it will obtain from the meal. Tune your cast, control your loops and make it the fly look like a free lunch and you'll catch more fish!
