Florida Keys Outfitters Newsletter
Greetings!

Early fall in the Florida Keys brought pleasant relief from this summer's heat.  In spite of a few short intervals with wind and clouds, user friendly redfish continue to swarm the flats of Florida Bay where the bite is on!  Keys bonefishing made a slight bit of an uptick for some and we have had some banner days with tarpon on the flats.  Offshore action is picking up with some great dolphin catches and a few saifish are starting to show.

Fall's high tides at full and new moons once more brought permit onto the bayside shallows where local angler Gary Van Iderstine poled his 6'8" son Scott close enough to toss a crab to a really nice one!

Scott Van Iderstine ready to release a jumbo Permit

After hearing for years about the great redfishing in Louisiana, Sue and I joined good friends Mindy and Bob Rich for a few days to sample the fishing, tunes and New Orleans cuisine.

We fished with Capt David Mangum and Capt Christian Yergens of Shallow Water Expeditions (850) 534-4349 www.shallowwaterexpeditions.com.  Sue and I spent one of the days with David and all the stars fell into alignment with Jupiter and Mars!  Of course Sue continues to remind me that she caught several larger than my largest ever below... Will definitely try that again!

David ready to release a Louisiana Redfish for Sandy

The outlook is for snook and redfishing to pick up through the late fall and Florida Bay and Gulf Spanish mackerel runs should start cranking soon.  Please let us know if you would like help booking an excellent skiff guide or bay boat trip.  Now is also the time to arrange days for some spring tarpon fishing. Best bet is to call us at (305) 664-5423 or book online.

Sandy's Angling Tip of the Month

Keep your fly line clean and well lubed!  Fishing in salt or brackish water allows for a gradual buildup of salt or pollen skim on your fly line as the water dries and residue remains between casts.  The buildup occurs in subtly increasing increments over a long span of time and I find myself working harder to achieve the same casting results as the hour before.  I carry a small plastic box with built in felt pads and a slot to run the line through.  A little Glide dressing or anything mostly silicone provides lubrication as the pad cleans.  If you keep it your pocket, you will use it, and if you use it 4 or 5 times a day, you'll catch more fish!

Holiday Gift Ideas

Glide Dressing & Umpqua Fly Line Cleaning Box

Such a small item and so big a difference!  Apply the Glide Dressing liberally on the pads in the Umpqua line cleaning box. Leave the Glide at home and put the box in your pocket to use frequently during the day... This will make a huge difference in you fly line performance!

FREE shipping is back on orders over $100.  See website for details.

Enrico Puglisi Shares Fly Tying Tips at Florida Keys Outfitters

Enrico Puglisi spent the afternoon sharing tying tips with local captains and anglers!  There was a lot of interest, because his new materials can be used to create many very effective patterns.  Everyone was pretty impressed and I think the local fish are in for some surprises!

A mixed dozen of Enrico's Peanut Butter, Crabs and Shrimp Patterns would make a great holiday gift for any angler or heck, just keep them for you to use!

  Tournament & Keys News

The Women's Fall Fly Classic Oct. 4-7 brought some very talented guides and anglers together for three days of fly fishing for bonefish, redfish, snook & tarpon.  Fishing out of The Loreli and Islamorada Fishing Club, the women encountered strong winds and thunderstorms most days. It is a slam format tournament where most species trumps.  Joan Goodman of Pembroke Pines fishing with Capt Chris Jones won the event with 6 redfish and 1 snook release on fly.  Next year's dates are October 2-4, 2012.  For more information contact Jodie Reese at jarfsu87@hotmail.com.
