Florida Keys Outfitters Newsletter
Greetings!

Keys migratory tarpon season has finally wound down but what a spring it was! From February through the middle of June anglers experienced awesome tarpon fishing from the Marquesas up through Key Largo.

As summer heats up there are still tarpon to be found, but lots of other dandy targets will share the spotlight for the next few months. Bonefishing has made a nice uptick after a pretty slow year and redfishing has been stellar for some near Flamingo in Florida Bay. There are some good snook on the flats as well. Sue & I fished a few days with Capt Steve Huff and we were lucky enough to catch several bonefish and a nice permit even in calm wind and nippy tides.

George Soubasis of Pembroke Pines released this really nice snook on the fly.

Matt Seng & his dad had a spectacular 57 redfish on fly day with Capt Dave Denkert!

Sandy with a nice permit.

Sam & Ilana Reich of Miami had a great bonefish day in Biscayne Bay with Capt Bob Branham

We've also heard of really good fishing from our friends in other areas of the country as well.

Jorge Martinez has been walking the beach near Jupiter for years getting shots at big snook and finally connected with this monster!

Jack Salisbury of Islamorada landed this 39# striper of a lifetime with Capt Paul DiMaura off Martha's Vineyard. They had a great day of sight fishing for these jumbos.

Keys best fishing bets for the rest of the summer will be for bonefish, permit, redfish and tripletail. Lots of guides are taking a break after the frantic tarpon season but some really good ones are available all summer. Best bet is to call us @ (305) 664-5423 or book a trip online.

Sandy's Angling Tip of the Month

Control the roll!  Too often I see a cast aimed on in a good line direction but the loop unrolls too high above the water. The result is that the fly and leader drift back or off to the side causing slack and a missed opportunity. Same thing can occur when you shoot all the line that's off the reel and it comes abruptly to the end jerking back at you. Practice adjusting the plane of your stroke to let the line and leader unroll just above the water. Then feather the line between your fingers to stop the forward progress.  You will end up with a straighter line from line hand to fly giving more control for instant stripping, plus you'll catch more fish!

  Tournament Updates

Gold Cup Tarpon Tournament:  June 20-24

ISLAMORADA, Florida Keys - Greg Smith of Laguna Vista, Texas, has dominated Florida Keys tarpon tournaments in 2011, winning his latest grand champion title at the prestigious Gold Cup Invitational Tarpon Tournament held June 20-24 in Islamorada.

Smith, fishing with Captain Bill Hagen of South Padre Island, Texas, posted five weight fish and 10 releases. Smith recently took top honors at the Don Hawley Invitational Tarpon Tournament and the Florida Keys' Outback Golden Fly Tarpon Tournament held in May.

Ned Johnson of Charleston, S.C., released 11 fish to land the tournament's title for most releases. He also scored three weight fish to end the tournament in second place. Johnson's guide was Captain Doug Kilpatrick of Summerland Key, Fla.

Mike Rioles from Richmond, R.I., took third place with one release and four weight fish. He also caught the tournament's largest tarpon, at 131.2 pounds, and was named the event's best new angler. Rioles fished with Captain Mark Krowka of Islamorada.

Twenty-five anglers fished the Gold Cup, capturing 108 tarpon counted as releases and 29 that weighed a minimum of 70 pounds each and were counted as weight fish.

The 2012 tournament is set for June 18-22 and pits 25 fly-rod anglers against the tenacious silver king for four straight days of fishing.  Tournament proceeds benefit children's charities in the Florida Keys.   Contact: Charlotte Ambrogio 305-942-0428 Email: csasun@aol.com

Del Brown Invitational Permit Tournament:  July 17 - 20  Anglers targeted permit and recalled late angling legend Del Brown Sunday through Wednesday, July 17-20. The Del Brown Invitational Permit Tournament honors the inventor of the Del Brown Permit Fly whose passion for the wily sport-fish led him to catch more than 500 during his lifetime. This year's fishing conditions were exactly opposite of what permit anglers like; cloud cover, light wind and neap tides! Over tough three days Greg Vincent with Capt Justin Rea managed to catch one on the final day to win. Contact: Charlotte Ambrogio 305-942-0428 Email: csasun@aol.com

Florida Keys Fly Fishing School

The Florida Keys Fly Fishing School is now in our 23rd year of classes. For those who have not attended, the school maintains a unique blend of focus while not losing sight of the fact that fly fishing is all about having a good time. From beginners to seasoned anglers there is something for everyone.

I am proud that one of the schools greatest attributes is the outstanding group of instructors that take the time to personally connect with each student and offer their own unique flavor of world class instruction and encouragement. Their passion for the sport is evident and we're fortunate to have each of them.

Ashley from Colorado knows how to put 10 solid pounds of pressure to whip a big fish fast, and Sage Rod Company's master rod designer Jerry Siem not only knows how to roll graphite but also how a bonefish should react when I cast.

Ted Jurascik lends his knowledge and expertise teaching fly fishing student Sabrina while Cynthia practices her casting during one of the many hands-on practice sessions throughout the weekend.

Mastering the Double Haul @ The Florida Keys Fly Fishing School

Next session is the fall weekend of October 28th - 30th and space is available.

If you've never attended a session of the Florida Keys Fly Fishing School, please make plans to do so today. We look forward to seeing you there. For more information call (305) 664-5423 or email. A complete listing of 2011 school sessions is available.
