Greetings!
Strong tides and generally nice weather through September and October brought some wonderful permit fishing to the Florida Keys. Permit aficionado Jon Ain of Summerland Key related he had some fantastic days with shots at lots of really big fish. Near Flamingo, Dr. Milt Weinberg of Chicago caught several tarpon and jumped quite a few more fishing a week with Capt. Drew Moret. I was with Capt Rusty Albury on one of those days and we had several shots at big tarpon and cruising redfish.

Last night the first cold front of the season passed through and we woke to a delightful 62 degrees with bluebird skies. A little cool for permit but it should really kick off the redfishing and snook fishing. This should also bring our first really big push of sailfish offshore. As temperatures pick back up over the next few days permit fishing should bounce right back.
Some interesting sidebars included in this new letter are:
- The great casting new G. Loomis NRX Fly Rods are in stock from size 7 through 12 weight
- The disturbing first reports from the BTT Fall Bonefish Census
- The fascinating personalities of the diverse individuals who entered this year's class of International Game Fish Association Hall of Fame Inductees

Sandy's Angling Tip of the Month
Keep a rod with a piece of yarn at the end of the leader rigged and ready somewhere around your home. Most of us have some open space within a few minutes' walk from the front door and when you get 30 minutes to kill with some decent weather, take the rod out & practice your casting, regardless of your skill level. Focus on graceful loops at short and medium distances of 25 to 45 feet. If the loops look smooth and wave free, you've got it! Casting is the most important part of our sport, but often the most neglected. If you leave the rod rigged, you'll use it. Casting is fun and relaxing and you'll catch more fish too!

What G.Loomis says about the new NRX Fly Rods
Anglers know G.Loomis is a long-time leader in graphite rod blank technology. It started with IM6 and GL2, then to GL3 and IMX, and then GLX more than 16 years ago, the only graphite made strictly for use in the construction of fishing rods. The next breakthrough is here with the G.Loomis NRX fly rod series. " With the support of the G.Loomis team worldwide, we have developed a series of rods at least 15-percent lighter than equivalent power GLX rods and they offer a durability feature making them up to 20-percent stronger and more impact resistant" said Chief rod designer Steve Rajeff. As anglers expect from G.Loomis, the best components - from reel seats, grips and guides - were selected specifically for the NRX fly rod series. These NRX rods are the best at every level in terms of graphite, resins and components, providing anglers with the most dynamic, lightweight and sensitive rods made. The NRX construction method is completely unique to rod manufacturing, utilizing a stiffer, lighter and higher density carbon married with Nano Silica resin systems the rods are lighter, more durable, extremely sensitive, and yet stiffer. All NRX fly rods feature black Ion coated REC Recoil guides. Each rod's custom reel seat - proprietary to G.Loomis - has no exposed threads making it easy to lock the reel into the reel seat. The grips feature G.Loomis' "HD cork" design, where the cork transitions to provide sensitivity and more durability in where needed. Fly anglers will experience on the water sensitivity through the rod blank that they have never felt before - either in a G.Loomis rod or any other. You are welcome to come by the shop and demo one today. We have the primary salt water sizes, 7 through 12 weighs in stock.

Bonefish; The Retrieve, The Hookup, and Fight. By J.M. Chico Fernandez
THE FLY LANDED in the right place. You let the small shrimp imitation sink to the proper level, and the bonefish seems to have noticed it. It's time to start acting like a shrimp. You begin a series of very short strips, trying to make the fly imitate the slow progress of a small shrimp that hasn't yet spotted the predator closing in on it. But the bonefish loses interest and turns away as if he never saw the fly. What happened? My guess is that the fly never moved.

International Game Fish Association Hall of Fame Induction Ceremonies
On the 26th of October, Sue & I spent a fantastic evening at the International Game Fish Association Hall of Fame Induction Ceremonies. We thouroughly enjoyed celebrating with so many angling friends both new and old. I found it fascinating how the inductees had spent their lives in such diverse ways to support the sport of fishing. They are truly angling heroes and I wanted to share their stories with you. Yoshiro Hattori born in 1929was one of the first to introduce the concept of recreational angling to the people of Japan. Steve Huff born in 1945 has spent the last 40 years poling South Florida waters and is the most well-respected guide in the history of flats fishing. George G. Matthews has given generously of his time and resources to numerous causes and organizations, but none has benefited more from his dedication than the International Game Fish Association. John Wilson is credited with the revival of recreational fishing in the United Kingdom, and may be that country's most respected, most popular, and most successful angler. Forrest Wood is best known as the Father of the modern bass boat. Not long after founding Ranger Boats in 1968 the company became the largest manufacturer of bass boats in the country.

No Sugar Coating the first reports of the BTT Fall Bonefish Census
Preliminary figures are in from last month's South Florida bonefish census, and the news is not good. Fisheries scientist Jerry Ault of the University of Miami's Rosenstiel School said there is a''substantial decrease'' in the fall population estimate, conducted every year since 2003. About 60 guides and anglers who poled across the flats from Biscayne Bay to the Marquesas Keys west of Key West on Oct. 23 counted about 200,000 bonefish - way down from the mean estimate of 339,595 over the past eight years. Ault said the past three fall censuses have been below that mean but not nearly as low as the latest count. Read Sue Cocking's article.
