Greetings!
August brings a well received break from the frantic pace of tournaments, the spring migration of tarpon and anglers through the Florida Keys. Still, there are lots of small tarpon, redfish, permit, tripletail and bonefish on the flats with very little fishing pressure. Most days are calm and warm with afternoon rain squalls. I am not surprised to see our daily heat index lower than the rest of the country and it's pretty darn pleasant on the water.
Throughout the last four months NOAA indicated the Florida Keys would likely be spared any significant impact from the Deep Water Horizon/BP Oil spill. Even with NOAA's cautiously comforting forecasts, the undercurrent of impending disaster created a stressful situation here in the islands and was amplified by the sensationalism of national media reporting. All along, Keys fishing has been pretty spectacular this summer and we are now all breathing a deep sigh of relief with the final kill stages being completed on the well.
Whether you're fly fishing, any kind of fishing, snorkeling or lounging around the pool, it's a great time to be in the Keys. The rest of the summer and fall looks a lot brighter for all on the Gulf Coast

Sandy's Angling Tip of the Month
Beat the Heat - Summer-time angling in the Keys can be hot, in more ways than one. Keeping cool and properly hydrated is critical to productive fishing days. Don't forget to drink plenty of water, chilled fruit in the cooler can help with hydration and it's refreshing. Long sleeve shirts and pants made of performance fabrics will also protect your skin from the sun and keep you cooler.

Tournament Updates

Florida Keys
Outfitters/IGFA Inshore World Championships - July 12-15, 2010 "That's how the fishing is here in
Islamorada, at any time you're one cast away from a great day on the
water," said Mike Myatt, COO of the International Game Fishing Association in Dania Beach, Fla. Twenty-three anglers caught a
total of 78 fish over three tough days. "The quality of the fish caught
and the quality of the anglers and guides really shine in this event, and when
you throw in the strategy of chasing a slam, it really brings out the best in
the competitors. Light

Brown Permit Tournament, Key West
FL, July 21-23, 2010 In the late 90's when legendary permit
fly angler Del Brown was first approached with the idea of a permit fly
tournament, his first response was, "you must be crazy!" After
some thought, Brown warmed up to the proposal, and even became excited about
such a difficult and unique competition. The late Del Brown would
certainly have called this year's field
"crazy". Participants faced 25-30 plus mph winds and
nearly total cloud cover, making the already tough job of fooling a permit on
fly even more challenging. Read the full tournament wrap-up.
