Florida Keys Outfitters

Florida Keys Outfitters Newsletter
Greetings!

Tarpon was the game for May and Tarpon is the game for June in the Florida Keys! 2009 was one of the best seasons I have ever experienced for tarpon fishing, but it appears 2010 may top last year. Not only are there lots of fish, but they are on the bite in a big way. Three days into the Don Hawley Tarpon Tournament, 24 talented anglers have released 124 tarpon over four feet in length! Eight or ten hookups a day are common this week. Anglers are having similar success up and down the entire Florida Keys. Florida Keys Outfitters has been crowded every afternoon with anglers replenishing flies, leaders and fly lines at a blistering pace.

Sue Moret waits for the shot!Nice shot Sue!

To an issue foremost in everyone's mind - we are feeling deep empathy and sharing the anguish our friends and fellow anglers are experiencing in the Northern Gulf of Mexico. The reality of a potential problem for coastal Florida has everyone experiencing increased anxiety, especially from the overload of repetitive and distorted network sensationalism.

I urge you to use NOAAas a reliable source for your information. http://www.noaa.gov/ NOAA's site charts accurate locations of oil, density, and projected locations.  It shows vast areas in the Gulf open to fishing which currently includes all waters in the State of Florida.

In reality, Keys' fishing is beyond excellent right now and there appears to be no immediate threat to our natural resource. Feel free to call (305) 664-5423 or email info@floridakeysoutfitters.com for up to the minute fishing reports and to book some prime time flyfishing!

Sandy's Angling Tip of the Month

After your cast, it's critical to keep your stripping hand in direct contact with the fly by not allowing slack into the fly line and leader. Keeping the rod tip low to the water will help insure you remain "in touch" with the fly.  A boat drifting toward a fish, or a choppy day will create slack, and it's easy to get "disconnected" from the fly as the deck of the skiff rises and falls.  Remember, when you strip the line, the fly needs to move and you'll catch more fish!
