Greetings!
So far this fall fishing in the Florida Keys has been hot and cold, with much of that weather dependent. With cool fronts finally sweeping down through the Keys, the fish have been pushed around and perked up a little. Snook and redfish have been great targets in backcountry areas of Florida Bay and along the flats bonefishing has been steady, particularly if it coincides with good weather. Recent FKO guide trips have produced catches of bonefish, redfish, jack crevalle, snook and juvenile tarpon.

Sandy's Angling Tip of the Month
Tying secure knots that won't slip is one of the most overlooked aspects for saltwater fly anglers. The finest leader material available won't compensate for weak knots. If you tie secure knots you'll confidently catch more fish with fewer broken tippets! With must know knots like the bimini twist, blood knot, nail knot and a Duncan Loop (Uni Knot) you are good to go in any situation.

Tournament Updates
The 10th Annual Islamorada Sail-fly Championship is set for January 13 & 14, 2010! We have 19 teams registered with a limit of 20 teams. This very tough tournament draws some of the most avid fly rod sailfish anglers anywhere! In our first year 14 teams competed and no one landed a sailfish. It was declared a 14 way tie for first place and here we are 10 years later. We are hooking and catching a lot more... The Florida Keys Outfitters/IGFA Inshore World Championship has sent 42 invitations to the winners of qualifying events that occurred in 2009. The world championship will be held in Islamorada on July 13, 14 & 15, 2010. A show of the tournament from July 2008 will air on ESPN Saltwater Series in April 2010 & we have just reached agreement with ESPN to produce a show of the July 2010 competition as well. It is a multispecies tournament with outstanding guides and anglers during prime fishing time.

Florida Wildlife Commission to Protect Permit?
A new set of recommendations from Florida Wildlife Commission staff suggests -- unbelievably -- going backwards on protections for permit, allowing spearing of the fish for the first time and ignoring the rising voice of anglers who want to see the fish achieve gamefish status.
Jon Ain, who besides running the March Merkin Invitational Permit Tournament in Key West is an outspoken advocate of permit protection, suggests that it's finally time for the FWC to stop the commercial harvest of permit in their spawning zones. Find out more on permit issues...
Viewing the Keys Through Valerie Fecher's Lens
"In 1971, my parents decided to leave the rat race behind and move me and my two sisters down to the Keys," said Fecher, who lived on Big Pine Key and attended Marathon High School. "Big Pine was a small rural area back then and they liked that." Read and view images...
I've seen it all now (humor)
Having fished tarpon for 30 years we thought we'd seen it all until now...

Fly Fishing for Bonefish, by Chico Fernandez
Fly-Fishing for Bonefish covers bonefish biology, its foods, and how tide influences the fishing. The section on gear for bonefishing describes the specifics of bonefish flies, lines, rods, and reels, how to rig your tackle, and the best leader configurations. And getting down the fishing, Chico Fernandez explains the hunt for bonefish, casting techniques, the retrieve, hookup, and fight, landing and safe release. Tips on traveling to the flats and insights on how to better protect our saltwater resources. A must have for any saltwater angler's collection.

Florida Keys Outfitter's custom folding knives. Hand crafted out of 440c surgical stainless steel then bead blasted for a glass finish. Handles or scales are of certified 15,000 year old mammoth ivory or pre-ban elephant ivory traditionally scrimshawed with beautiful game fish. These pieces are comfortable in the hand or pocket as a working knife as well as a desktop letter opener. Can be purchased online or call us if you'd like more details, 305-664-5423.
Sage Xi3 saltwater fly rod - Through Sage's exclusive SaltH2O Technology, Xi3 rods provide a groundbreaking level of torque and torsion resistance for superior tracking and less wasted energy at all distances. SaltH2O's unique layer interface and proprietary resin also combine for maximum strength-even in high heat environments-and significantly less weight.
This increased strength comes in handy when you need to lean on powerful saltwater bruisers. Just as importantly, it gives you the backbone to pick up 60 or 70 feet of line on desperate second (and last) chance casts.
