July 2009

Greetings!
Wow! The 2009 Florida Keys Outfitters/IGFA Inshore World Championships came down to the wire on Thursday, July 9 at 3:00pm! While the first place winners became evident shortly after lines out, second and third were so tight it took hours for all the teams to return with score sheets and determine the order of the new World Champions. Word on the dock is that anglers and guides agreed this was one of the most exciting, upbeat and fun events of the year!
Weather and fishing was exceptional with 16 teams vying for the Fly Fishing World Championship and 16 teams pursuing the Light Tackle World Championships fishing for five of the Florida Keys most coveted game fish; bonefish, permit, tarpon, snook and redfish.

The tournament winds down a busy season of exceptional tarpon fishing in the Florida Keys. Actually, in this year's Gold Cup Tarpon Tournament twice as many more tarpon were caught than in last year's event.

The bulk of tarpon fishing has been on the ocean side of the Keys this season and two technical breakthroughs were major factors contributing to the dynamic hook up rates. A significant factor which has been a growing trend over the past several years is the use of very small tarpon flies.
A series named Tarpon Tapas tied on Gamakatsu SL12S in 1/0's has worked well for me this year. At first I was reluctant to use such a small hook on 16 pound class tippet, but they are strong and you can really reef on the tarpon with these hooks.

Another new item that has been a smash this year for many tarpon anglers is the Cortland PE+ Crystal clear fly line... casts great, fights fish tough! Be careful to manage it on the deck by casting and clearing it frequently and then laying out large loose coils in the cockpit... With a good angler, it's not fair to fish |
Speaking of small flies, here's our June Photo of the Month from Paul Nute of Miami. Congratulations and a $100 Gift Card from Florida Keys Outfitters is on the way to you!

On another note, Sue and I spent a week recently fishing with Capt Steve Huff. Most everyone was focused on tarpon so we concentrated on bonefish. We saw scads of bonefish and caught quite a few like this nice 6 or 7 pound bonefish. Sue caught it tailing in inches of water on a white hot flat calm day.
Well, we didn't bonefish all day... we tarpon fished later in the afternoons and in some areas where larger flies worked. They worked so well, I just had to show this permit off! Rubber lips ate a 5" brown tarpon streamer which proves about fishing - take what you can get and be happy for it!
There's plenty of the years best fishing coming up over the next several months so come on down!
Really great guides are available with time for you. Call (305) 664-5423 or book with us online.
Tight Loops,
Okay, okay, so it is my website... I like to brag a little too! |
