The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) recently announced the new project awards for the FY2009 CoC (Continuum of Care) Homeless Assistance Funds Competition. Several projects in Virginia were funded but MANY COC APPLICATIONS WERE NOT FUNDED.

On October 21, 2010, the Virginia Coalition to End Homelessness will sponsor the Virginia Statewide Summit on Family and Youth Homelessness. Among many interactive, productive and fun sessions, we will provide a three hour institute to help you increase your competitiveness for these funds. You can get money from HUD and other sources; attend on October 21 to find out how!

SHOW ME THE MONEY: EXAMINING AND IMPLEMENTING SMALL TOWN AND RURAL STRATEGIES THAT WILL INCREASE COMPETITIVENESS FOR HUD AND OTHER DOLLARS

Session Description. This session will increase participant knowledge on how to attract resources to prevent and end homelessness in small towns and rural communities. Participants will then use the information presented and discussed to craft their own action plans for how to increase resources in their own communities and identify how VCEH can support their efforts moving forward.

Virginia's small towns and rural communities have a unique set of challenges in adequately addressing the problem of homelessness and housing instability. This session will explore these common obstacles and identify practical steps that communities can take to overcome these challenges. Participants will share and learn about small town and rural community strategies and initiatives currently underway in Virginia and from across the country.

Attendees are encouraged - but not required - to attend with a group of colleagues from their communities to facilitate action planning.

Registration for the October 21 Symposium will be open soon. Check out this e-newsletter and our website - www.vceh.org - for more information.

Please note: Homeward, the planning and coordinating organization for homeless services in the Greater Richmond region, will host their 4th Annual Best Practices Conference on October 20, 2010, in Richmond. This event will complement VCEH's October 21 event, and we encourage you to attend a great conference focused on preventing and ending homelessness in the Richmond region.
