Message from the Chief |

This month's message is dedicated to all members of the public safety profession who serve the public each day in honor of National Police Week, beginning on May 14.
In 1962, Congress enacted legislation establishing May 15th as Peace Officers Memorial Day to honor federal, state and local officers killed or disabled in the line of duty, and the calendar week of each year during which such May 15 occurs as National Police Week. In 1994, Congress and President Bill Clinton provided for the flag of the United States to fly at half-staff on all government buildings on May 15.
Annual Remembrance for Sunnyvale DPS Officers Killed in the Line of Duty
Since our nation was founded, over 19,000 peace officers have been killed in the line of duty. In 1991, President George Bush dedicated the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington D.C. It honors all of America's federal, state and local law enforcement officers who have been killed in the line of duty since the first known officer's death in 1792. Five Sunnyvale officers have died in the line of duty since 1950, when the Public Safety Department was created. They are:
PSO Gary Larson, 23 years old and a two-year veteran, was shot and killed on January 28, 1962.
PSO Charles Morris, 34 years old and a three-year veteran, was shot and killed on September 23, 1972.
PSO Charles Fraker, 25 years old and a two-year veteran, died from injuries suffered while fighting a fire on August 1, 1976.
PSO Edward Roth, 44 years old and a sixteen-year veteran, died from injuries suffered while fighting a fire on November 29, 1980.
PSO Manuel Lopez, 29 years old and an eight-year veteran, was killed in a traffic accident on March 3, 1987.
The following photo shows the names of our officers on the Memorial that was dedicated in October 2008 to honor their bravery and courage. Please keep them in your thoughts as we pay tribute for the service they provided to our community.

National Police Week is May 13-19 |

ABOUT NATIONAL POLICE WEEK
In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15th as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as Police Week. Currently, tens of thousands of law enforcement officers from around the world converge on Washington, DC to participate in a number of planned events which honor those that have paid the ultimate sacrifice.
The Memorial Service began in 1982 as a gathering in Senate Park of approximately 120 survivors and supporters of law enforcement. Decades later, the event, more commonly known as National Police Week, has grown to a series of events which attracts thousands of survivors and law enforcement officers to our Nation's Capital each year.
The National Peace Officers' Memorial Service, which is sponsored by the Grand Lodge of the Fraternal Order of Police, is one in a series of events which includes the Candlelight Vigil, which is sponsored by the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund (NLEOMF)and seminars sponsored by Concerns of Police Survivors (C.O.P.S.)
National Police Week draws in between 25,000 to 40,000 attendees. The attendees come from departments throughout the United States as well as from agencies throughout the world. This provides a unique opportunity to meet others that share a common brotherhood. In that spirit, the Fraternal Order of Police DC Lodge #1 sponsors receptions each afternoon and evening during Police Week. These events are open to all law enforcement personnel and are an experience unlike any other. |
CPR and Defibrillation Saves Lives |
On Sunday, April 29, Public Safety Officers responded to assist a 56-year-old male who had complained of chest pain to his family and suddenly collapsed. The family quickly and appropriately initiated Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and called 911. Public Safety Dispatchers provided telephone instructions to the family on how to care for the patient while dispatching fire and police-based personnel to the scene.
Four patrol officers arrived quickly on scene and continued CPR while applying an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). They evaluated the patient's cardiac rhythm and four shocks were applied to treat the abnormal cardiac electrical activity.
The rapid application of CPR by the family, and the quick arrival of Sunnyvale Public Safety Officers who applied an AED, resulted in bringing the patient back to consciousness. While being transported to the hospital, two more shocks were delivered by the paramedics.
This coordinated response from family members and Public Safety personnel resulted in getting the patient to an emergency care facility where further lifesaving measures could be administered. Members of the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety are cross- trained as police officers, firefighters and emergency medical technicians.
AEDs are deployed in all Public Safety vehicles and throughout City of Sunnyvale buildings/offices in order to enhance lifesaving measures for residents and guests of our City. |
New Bicycle and Helmet on Behalf of the PSOA
|
On April 14, a major injury traffic collision occurred at the intersection of El Camino Real and Grape Avenue. A four-year-old child was struck by a vehicle while he was riding his bicycle on the sidewalk. The child suffered multiple fractures and severe burns as a result of the collision. He was not wearing a helmet at the time of the collision.
On May 9, after the child was released from the hospital, he was greeted by fire and police personnel welcoming the child home and lifting his spirits. On behalf of the Public Safety Officers Association, the child was provided with a new bicycle and a helmet. The young child was very excited, and the family was very appreciative of the gesture.

Vargas School Marathon Club & Second Annual 5K Kids Fun Run and Walk |
The second annual 5K K.I.D.S. Fun Run & Walk was held on Saturday, May 5, at the Columbia Middle School track. This 5K is a gateway for event partners K.I.D.S., a nonprofit founded by a Sunnyvale youth, and DPS, to address childhood obesity by encouraging kids to get moving and stay healthy while having fun.
More than 200 runners, walkers, volunteers, and supporters attended this free event, which accommodated a wide range of participants, from experienced runners to casual walkers, and families with young children in strollers. The incredible smiles and spirits of all in attendance brightened the already sunny day, and everyone left inspired by the event's message to "Get Moving. Stay Healthy. Have Fun."
K.I.D.S. and DPS appreciate the support of a number of local sponsors who helped to make this event possible: Adam Mody, Bullene Landscaping, HINT, Hobees, Honest Beverages, Jamba Juice, Kathleen Meadows, Larry Hopkins Honda, Moose Lodge Sunnyvale, Nothing Bundt Cakes Sunnyvale, Pirate Brands, PostNet Sunnyvale, RoadID, Silicon Valley Ambulance, Spitfire Advertising, Sports Basement, Sunnyvale National Little League and Trader Joe's.

Tip a Cop at Coco's Results |
On Thursday morning April 12, officers from Sunnyvale DPS partnered with Special Olympics Northern California and Coco's Family Restaurant for the "Tip-a-Cop" breakfast event. Tip-a-Cop is part of the annual Law Enforcement Torch Run campaign that earns funds for Special Olympic athletes. The campaign includes a statewide series of relay runs and special events to raise funds for athletes to compete in the Special Olympics.
During Tip-a-Cop, officers performed as "celebrity" waiters with all of their tips going to Special Olympics. Officers raised more than $3,000 from this breakfast alone. This is more than double the average for tips for breakfast events in Northern California and it breaks last year's record for Sunnyvale DPS by almost $1,000.
Officers will be "waiting" at another Tip-a- Cop event on June 4 at Country Gourmet, 1314 S. Mary Ave. for breakfast and lunch. Special Olympics provides year-round sports training and competition to thousands of children and adults with intellectual disabilities, at no cost to the athlete or their caregiver, as a means to achieve physical fitness, self-esteem, socialization skills and the life skills necessary to be productive, respected and contributing members of their communities.
There are many opportunities to volunteer your time or donate to Special Olympics. For more information visit Special Olympics Northern California's website at www.sonc.org .
