Message from the Chief

In this, my last "Message from the Chief," I thought it would be appropriate to say a final thank you to every reader for taking the time to support and shape our Department of Public Safety; and to say thank you to the fine men and women in our department, not only for the work they do each day, but for their willingness to pour their heart and  soul into every call for service and every connection they make with our community.

This really is a great place to live, and the Department of Public Safety is one of the driving forces that makes it so. The men and women that serve  you, from dispatchers answering your 911 calls, to records specialists at the front counter, to the officers who  respond to your emergencies - they are all the very best of the best!  We've come a long way over the last 61 years when this department was established and we have many to thank for their contributions, several of them giving their lives in service.  From technology advances, to the achievement of a very low crime rate, to well-trained and equipped firefighters, I am very proud to have taken part in building a great Department of Public Safety.

I can assure you that our tradition of exceptional service will continue as Deputy Chief Dayton Pang assumes the role of the Chief on June 12.  Chief Pang will "take the reins" while a search for the next chief is completed during the coming months. Chief Pang has 22 years of Public Safety experience and you will find him to be a smart and talented leader. Chief Pang's willingness to serve leaves me comfortable in knowing that the Department of Public Safety is in great hands.

As I leave Sunnyvale and move on with my wife Denise to Lake Oswego, Oregon where I will assume the role of Police Chief, I offer my sincere thanks to every person who offered support for our department during my six years as Chief - you made us better and ensured a bright future for our department and our city of Sunnyvale.

KLD Soccer Camp

SUNNYVALE DPS  AND MOUNTAIN VIEW PAL

2011 KICK, LEAD AND DREAM (KLD) SOCCER CAMP

The KICK, LEAD, AND DREAM SOCCER (KLDS) CAMP is a collaborative venture between Mountain View Police Activities League (MVPAL) and Challenge Team Sunnyvale, that brings the Police, teens and at-risk youth together to help develop on and off field skills.

The camp, running this year from July 5 - 15 (1:00- 4:00 p.m. WEEKDAYS ONLY), will be held at Cherry Chase Elementary School (1138 Heatherstone Way, Sunnyvale CA) features drills, scrimmages, motivational speakers and the chance for high school students to reach out to at-risk youth.

The two-week experience brings together professional soccer stars, police officers from Sunnyvale and Mountain View, community volunteers, all acting as coaches, and at-risk youth on the playing field to develop both soccer and life skills.

The campers are third through eighth grade boys and girls from Sunnyvale and Mountain View families who have been selected based on a risk assessment conducted by Sunnyvale and Mountain View Police in conjunction with school administration. We anticipate an enrollment in excess of two hundred campers.

The thrust of the KLDS camp, in addition to improving soccer skill, is to foster basic values of leadership, teamwork and integrity in the campers.  For the coaches, this program promotes leadership skills and teaches the young adults about the importance of volunteerism in a fun and motivational way.  Truly a collaborative effort, in addition to the coaches and guest speakers, the camp is enhanced on a daily basis through the participation of personnel from Sunnyvale DPS and Mountain View Police, at-risk youth counselors and motivational speakers.

Camp concludes on Friday, July 15 with a final scrimmage and a formal awards ceremony featuring presentations from Sunnyvale Public Safety Interim Chief Dayton Pang, Mountain View Police Chief Scott Vermeer and other community leaders.  However, the primary celebration will focus on the fact that this initiative is a true example of how a community can collaborate to create a positive and constructive environment for vulnerable children.

If you have questions or comments about the camp please contact Sunnyvale Public Safety Officer Bradley Militano at 408-730-7142 or email him at

Sunnyvale Wrestling Club Joins Boxing at Gateway

Sunnyvale Wrestling Club is a non-profit organization with the mission of helping promote strength in character to at-risk youth through the sport of wrestling. The focus on building youth of strong character through wrestling allows the club to be a great counterpart to the Sunnyvale Boxing Club who has a similar mission using the sport of boxing as their tool.

The club was started by Fremont High School Wrestling coach Vince Baza, who coached at Fremont for 20 years until 2000. From 2000 to 2010, Sunnyvale Wrestling Club had given way to the King of the Mat Club and then the Wrestler Nation Club. With the opportunity to bring wrestling to a location in Northern Sunnyvale, the club was re-founded in 2010 in partnership with Wrestler Nation. The original Sunnyvale Wrestling Club was a homage to the Sunnyvale High School Wrestling Team which Vince and his brothers wrestled. With his presence at Fremont High School and the tradition of great wrestling there, the club became synonymous with some of the toughest of Fremont High School wrestling.

Over the last 30 years, Sunnyvale Wrestling has had a great tradition building Sunnyvale's youth into strong good people who have been successful in school and the sport of wrestling. Being able to have a practice facility so much closer to the neighborhoods that provide such a strong base for wrestling in this city is a blessing. Hopefully, we will be able to continue to provide great instruction and guidance to our wrestlers and increase participation in the sport.

Our summer schedule is Mondays at 4:30 p.m. with coach Anthony Baza, and Wednesdays at 1:30 p.m. with coach Bobby Soto. More information can be found at www.sunnyvalewrestlingclub.com

Special Olympics Torch Run 2011

This year, the Special Olympics Torch will pass through Sunnyvale on June 16 on its way to light the flame at the 2011 Special Olympics Northern California Summer Games at UC Davis. The torch is carried from law enforcement agency to agency from Fresno to its ultimate destination. The Santa Clara Police Department will hand off the torch to Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety runners at the corner of El Camino and Halford (near the Fish Market) at approximately 2:30 p.m. DPS representatives will carry the torch to El Camino at Knickerbocker where they will pass it to the Mountain View Police Department at approximately 3:30 p.m.

For more information about the run, please phone (408)730-7140. Please click here for the link to the fundraising page.

Project ChildSafe

The Department of Public Safety encourages parents to keep their children and family safe this summer by properly securing their firearms. The latest statistics show that there are more than 270 million privately owned firearms in the United States today. Approximately 40% of Americans own at least one firearm and of those gun owners, more than 74% own more than one gun. The most recent data from the US Center for Disease Control and Prevention identifies that more than 3,000 children and teens die from gunfire in the United States each year. There were more kindergarten age children killed by accidental gunfire last year than Police Officers in the line of duty.

The Department of Public Safety has partnered with Project ChildSafe to ensure safe and responsible firearm ownership. Residents of Sunnyvale can stop by Public Safety to obtain a free cable-style gun lock. These locks will fit almost any firearm to provide a gun owner the ability to safely store their firearm.
