Message from the Chief

NATIONAL POLICE WEEK

Each year, between 140 and 160 police officers in the United States are killed in the line of duty and, since our nation was founded, over 19,000 officers have been killed. In 2010, line-of-duty deaths jumped by 37% from that in 2009.

In 1962, Congress enacted legislation establishing May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the calendar week of each year during which such May 15 occurs as National Police Week.

Each year, the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office holds a Peace Officers Memorial Service.  This year, the Memorial Service was held on Friday, May 13.

In 1991, President George Bush dedicated the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington D.C.  It honors all of America's federal, state and local law enforcement officers who have been killed in the line of duty since the first known officer's death in 1792.  Five Sunnyvale officers have died in the line of duty since 1950, when the Public Safety Department was created.  They are:

PSO Gary Larson, 23 years old and a two-year veteran, was shot and killed on January 28, 1962.

PSO Charles Morris, 34 years old and a three-year veteran, was shot and killed on September 23, 1972.

PSO Charles Fraker, 25 years old and a two-year veteran, died from injuries suffered while fighting a fire on August 1, 1976.

PSO Edward Roth, 44 years old and a sixteen-year veteran, died from injuries suffered while fighting a fire on November 29, 1980.

PSO Manuel Lopez, 29 years old and an eight-year veteran, was killed in a traffic accident on March 3, 1987.

The following photo shows the names of our officers on the Memorial that was dedicated in October 2008 to honor their bravery and courage.

May Is National Police Month

The official dates for National Police Week 2011 is May 15-21.

The 23rd Annual Candlelight Vigil at the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial took place on Friday, May 13.

The Candlelight Vigil is traditionally held on May 13th, regardless of the day of the week on which it falls. Every six or seven years, May 13th falls prior to the official start of National Police Week, as it will in 2011.

In 1962, President Kennedy proclaimed May 15th as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the calendar week in which May 15th falls, as National Police Week determining the dates for National Police Week 2011 - Sunday, May 15th through Saturday, May 21st.

The Peace Officers Memorial Day Service, hosted by the Fraternal Order of Police and the Fraternal Order of Police Auxiliary is always held on May 15th, again, regardless of the day of the week on which it falls.

Public Safety Officer Jim Davis Named Kiwanis Key Club Advisor of the Year

Kiwanis International is a global organization of members of every age who are dedicated to changing the world, one child and one community at a time. Kiwanis clubs, located in 80 nations, help their communities in countless ways. Each community's needs are different, so each Kiwanis club is different. By working together, members achieve what one person cannot accomplish alone. When you give a child the chance to learn, experience, dream, grow, succeed and thrive, great things happen.

There are several clubs within Kiwanis International including Aktion Club for adults with disabilities; Circle K International the largest university leadership organization in the world; Key Club teaches teens leadership through service to others; Builders Club for middle school students and Kiwanis Kids for elementary school students. In Sunnyvale, we have Kiwanis Club Silicon Valley, Key Clubs at Fremont and Homestead High Schools and Builders Club at Sunnyvale Middle School.

The Department of Public Safety partners with the Kiwanis Club on our annual Fire Safety Poster Contest and on our Helmet for Every Child Program. Our own Public Safety Officer Jim Davis is the Key Club Advisor at Homestead High School, the Builders Advisor at Sunnyvale Middle School and is also the Assistant Key Club Regional Advisor which includes 20 clubs.

In April, at the District conference in Anaheim, with 3,000 Key Club members present, PSO Jim Davis was named Kiwanis Club Advisor of the Year. This award was presented on behalf of over 600 Kiwanis Clubs in the district which consists of California, Nevada and Hawaii.

Tip a Cop at Coco's Bakery and Restaurant

The Public Safety breakfast Tip a Cop on April 21, raised $2100 for Special Olympics. Special Olympics athletes visited with diners while Public Safety Personnel assisted wait-staff with food service. The annual event is a fun opportunity to see old friends and meet new ones while supporting a good cause - Special Olympics.

Special Olympics provides year-round sports training and competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. In order to compete, participants must be at least 8 years old, however children between the ages of 5 and 7 years of age can participate in training.

Our programs give our athletes continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in the sharing of gifts, skill, and friendship with their families, other athletes and the community. There are training and competition opportunities year-round within Special Olympics Northern California. The programs are free to all eligible athletes and are possible thanks to the generous support from individuals and businesses who believe in Special Olympics athletes. For more information about Special Olympics, please visit their website www.sonc.org

Thank you to everyone who supported our event!
