Message from the Chief |
Happy New Year!
When It All Goes Right
I want to share some thoughts on what happens "when it all goes right," and I know of five very fortunate families that will support me "wholeheartedly."
Since July 2010 (four clustered in December), our officers have been able to save the lives of five sudden cardiac arrest victims by using the Automated External Defibrillators (AED) that we carry in every police car and fire engine in Sunnyvale. These "saves" represent a 14% success rate for the survivors, which believe it or not, is outstanding when compared to the national average of 2-3%.
The kudos in each of these "survival stories" go to each and every person involved in the chain of survival - "when everything goes right." The key factors that separate the fortunate few from the others include:
- Early recognition of the emergency by family, friends, or bystanders
- Early activation of the 911 system
- Immediate start of CPR, either through personal knowledge of through directions provided by our 911 Emergency Medical Dispatchers
- Quick application of the AED, by the first arriving Public Safety Officer
Now I ask that you go back and reread the success factors and I ask that you commit to learning CPR today, along with thinking through how you are going to respond when you find yourself in a situation that requires you to take action to save the life of a family member, friend or bystander. With more people prepared to help, the success factors multiply exponentially! Commit to doing your part to help make "it all go right!"
For information on CPR classes or a demonstration of one of our Automated External Defibrillators, call our Emergency Medical Coordinator, Charlene Donahue, at (408) 730-7519.

January is National Mentoring Month |
Pass It On... Become a Mentor!
What is a mentor? A mentor literally means "a wise and trusted friend." But to a youth, it can mean much, much more. Mentoring is about people of different ages and backgrounds sharing their life experiences and learning from each other. If you think about it, most of us have had a mentor: someone who took the time to explain how things worked, showed us the ropes, or gave us the confidence we needed.
If you've benefited from the attention of a mentor in your life, now is the time to pass it on and become a mentor to a young person!
For more information about become a mentor, please click here |
Sunnyvale Youth Mentoring Initiative |

National Mentoring Month exists to highlight the impact that caring adults have on youth through mentoring. When you were a child or young adult, was there someone in your life - a teacher, neighbor, relative, coach, friend, or boss - who encouraged you, showed you the ropes, and helped you become who you are today? That person was a mentor to you.
You don't need special skills to be a mentor, just an ability to listen and to offer friendship, guidance and encouragement to a young person. You will be amazed by how much you will get out of the experience. The Department of Public Safety and Reach Potential Movement are teaming up with our public schools to provide mentors for Sunnyvale youth. NEAT Teamwork Identifies Graffiti Suspect |
For the past several weeks, the Neighborhood Enhancement Action Team (NEAT) area of Helen Avenue, Tamarack Lane and surrounding streets, including Ponderosa Park, has been repeatedly hit with graffiti. The similar tagging occurred on fences, buildings, utility boxes and benches.
In response, the NEAT Street Team went door to door asking area residents to keep a lookout for graffiti taggers and to report any suspicious activity to the NEAT Street Team. Within two weeks, enough leads were generated to obtain a description of the tagger and pin-point an area in which he may live. His information was given to the area's Department of Public Safety (DPS) patrol squad, who then used school records to identify the suspect. With the help of local school officials, the suspect was interviewed and confessed to the taggings.
Individually, it would have been difficult for any one person or group to identify the graffiti suspect. This is another good example of how NEAT - working together with residents, schools, and City staff - were able to resolve an unsightly community issue. |
Basketball Shoot-off |
During the month of January, the Neighborhood Resource Officers conducted qualifiers for the annual Basketball Shoot-off for all seventh and eighth grade students in Sunnyvale. Competitors had 60 seconds to make as many baskets as possible from designated spots around the key. Finalists will be selected to represent each school in the following divisions: Seventh Grade Girls, Seventh Grade Boys, Eighth Grade Girls and Eighth Grade Boys.
The winner of each division will receive a Wii game system provided by the Sunnyvale Elks Lodge. All finalists receive a T-shirt and tickets to a University of Santa Clara Women's Basketball game the following day, where the winners will be honored.
The Basketball Shoot-off finals will be held at the Columbia Neighborhood Center on February 4 from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. The Santa Clara Women's Basketball players will be at the finals to provide tips to the Basketball Shoot-off participants and to rebound for them during the competition. |
Holiday Outreach - Rides for Toys |
Thanks to amazing community support and holiday cheer, the 3rd annual Rides for Toys was a great success!
Officers collected enough toys to fill sunnyvale Community Services' 15-passenger van. Len Williams of Fire Associates brought his 1920's fire engine for viewing which was very popular with the families.
One of the biggest needs for Community Services this holiday season was for toys, but they provide assistance year round. For more information about their programs and how you can help, please visit their website at www.svcommunityservices.com |

Crossing Paths |
At last year's San Jose Rock 'n' Roll Half Marathon, Neighborhood Resource Officer Brad Militano "ran" into Paul - a Special Olympics Northern California athlete. Paul was a familiar face because he usually helps members of DPS carry the Special Olympics Torch through Sunnyvale during the annual Torch Run in June. At the Half Marathon, Paul's time was 1:30 and Officer Militano ran it in 1:42. Not surprisingly, Officers often have to ask Paul to slow down during the Torch Run!
