Working with the Community
Challenge Bike Ride It was a great day for a bike ride and almost 1,000 folks came out to enjoy the second Annual Challenge Bicycle Ride on Sunday, May 2nd.

It was all about kids and families for the Challenge Ride. Whether they were pedaling, coasting, or riding in a basket, the excitement and smiles were evident on everyone's faces as they found their way through the neighborhoods of Mountain View, Sunnyvale, Los Altos, and Los Altos Hills along the 25-mile course.
And there were plenty of stops along the way at the 20 rest stations that provided refreshments, encouragement, and most importantly for the kids - the passport stamp that translated into a raffle ticket for some great prizes. Although the ride was designed to allow participants to start and stop at any point along the route, many of the riders met the challenge of completing the entire course.
The Challenge Ride is offered to community members free of charge to get kids involved in healthy activities with their families. There is an opportunity for the participants to sign a petition in support of children's issues which will be sent to our state and national leaders. And it is a chance for various community partners to come together in a big way to sponsor a very worthwhile activity. With the excitement generated from this year's event, we hope to make the 2011 Challenge Bicycle Ride bigger and better than ever!

Message from the Chief
Managing in Tight Times
We've been "sharpening our pencils" here at DPS during the last few months as we prepare our budget proposals for the City Council to consider before June 30th. I know you've seen media stories that describe the challenges local governments are facing, and we are not immune. As we prepare for the coming years, we are holding to the principle that we will do everything possible to "manage through" the current situation with an emphasis on maintaining core services citywide; and additionally for DPS, we are focusing on making decisions that will continue to ensure the safety of the public, and the safety of our officers as they go about their work. During the coming years, we will continue to deliver the very best police, fire, and emergency medical services, but we are trying to be smarter as to how we go about that work. For example, we are trying to leverage technology to make sure critical information is immediately accessible - with any luck, within the coming months our officers will have "virtual desktops" in their patrol cars - everything they need from the internet, to real time data on crimes that have occurred in every Bay area city. These changes will most certainly make us more efficient as we respond to calls and complete investigations. We are also looking at every job within DPS to see if it really needs to be done by an officer. Where possible, we will explore the possibility of reducing our number of sworn officers, and instead employing civilian professionals at a much reduced cost, as long as I can ensure changes will not affect the safety of the community or our officers. As a city, we are much better positioned than others to make simple course corrections - it's all part of our conservative budgeting process that spans 20 years. Wish us luck with our budget challenges - we certainly know you have your own as well. With planning and adjustments, I am certain we all will emerge much stronger and smarter!

Tip-a-Cop for Special Olympics
This year's Tip-a-Cop breakfast at Coco's Bakery Restaurant was a great success. Three Special Olympic athletes and several officers worked the crowd serving coffee, clearing tables and visiting with customers. The athletes Ryan, Lindsay and Scott sported medals they'd won in previous competitions, which were the perfect conversation starters as they interacted with the event participants to build awareness about Special Olympics.

The officers hustled to be sure coffee cups were filled and orders were delivered quickly, all for extra tips to donate to Special Olympics. In all, $2545 was raised! Please mark your calendar for our first-ever Tip-a Cop lunch at Faultline Brewery on Wednesday, July 14th from 11:30 A.M. to 2:00 P.M.

Kiwanis 'One Day' Key Club at Rope Course
The day started with a bit of a chill in the air. Clouds came rumbling over the expanses of Baylands Park. But this did not deter members of the Homestead and Fremont Key Clubs, as well as members of the Sunnyvale Middle School Builders Club and the Silicon Valley Kiwanis from gathering to participate in a Community Service Project.
The high school-aged Key Clubbers and the middle school Builders were at Baylands Park to spruce up the City of Sunnyvale's Ropes Course on Saturday, April 3rd. The Course is designed to instill the spirit of cooperation, team building, and leadership in a variety of groups that use the course.
The youngsters moved over 200 cubic yards of wood chip to areas around the course. The wood chips deter the growth of weeds around the course structures and make the use of the course much more convenient. Parks workers stated that it would have taken parks personnel two (2) weeks to accomplish what the 29 students did in one single afternoon.

The afternoon culminated in a barbeque for the participants and participation in a number of team building exercises. One of the exercises included students leading other blindfolded students out to the pier over looking the beautiful expanse of wet lands which surround the park. The day ended under sunny skies with smiles on the faces of the participants.

Dept. of Public Safety Open House
On Saturday, May 8th, hundreds of Sunnyvale residents attended the DPS Open House. Guests enjoyed a variety of interactive and educational activities at the event.

Some highlights included DPS Headquarters Tours, a Jaws of Life demonstration and a K-9 demonstration. For the kids, there were carnival games, a jump house and the Dept. of Community Services' Fun on the Runtruck with a larger-than-life Wii game system. To stave off the hungries, there was cotton candy, popcorn and hotdogs with ice cold lemonade to wash it all down. Kids and adults could dress up as officers and get their picture taken, and people interested in a career at Public Safety could speak with representatives from our Recruitment Unit. Best of all it was a wonderful opportunity for DPS personnel and Sunnyvale residents to get to know each other.
