Message from the Chief
An Invitation to Cross the Line..........

I am certain you have heard the term "the thin blue line," typically in reference to the police as the thin barrier that stands between criminals and the public; the separation between good and evil. - Well today, I invite you to step in and become part of "our thin blue line." Consider this your personal invitation to see the inner workings of your Public Safety Department at our third annual Public Safety Open House - Saturday, May 8, 2010  from 11:00 A.M.-3:00 P.M. at DPS Headquarters, 700 All America Way.

This is a great way to meet our officers and staff, to see emergency response demonstrations, including our "Jaws of Life" as we simulate a rescue from a crashed car; to see our Police K9 teams' narcotic detection capabilities; to tour our facilities, and to simply take a look at all the Department of Public Safety has to offer.

You will readily see just how eager our people are to serve your needs as citizens - whether in our neighborhoods, our schools, or in our business community. As Chief, I believe this is one of the best venues to share with the community and to hear your needs. Our interaction during the Public Safety Open House always results in positive change for us, and the feedback I hear during and after the event helps us shape our department for the year ahead.

The "thin blue line" doesn't seem so thin when we partner and work together to make Sunnyvale worthy of its reputation as a great place to live, work, and raise a family. I am so very proud of our officers and staff. Our Open House gives us a chance to get to know you just a bit better, and gives us a chance to showcase all that we stand for - so come by on May 8th and be a proud part of our Department of Public Safety - be part of our thin blue line!

Martin Luther King Day Brings Volunteers to Bishop Elementary School

On January 18th, a group of 60 volunteers from around the South Bay descended on Bishop Elementary School for a day of service. The volunteers were undaunted by the rainy, gloomy, weather because their mission was to bring beauty to the campus of the oldest school in the Sunnyvale School District.People from all walks of life worked together from 8:30 AM to 2:00 PM to rebuild planter boxes and create landscape around the garden that is tended by the children at the school.

 MLK Bishop Elementary School

The effort began in late November of 2009 when the Kaiser Permanente Foundation contacted Public Safety Captain Doug Moretto with an idea;Kaiser, working together with the non-profit organization Rebuilding Together, wanted to bring volunteers from the South Bay to an area of Sunnyvale that was in need of some "sprucing up." With funds obtained from several grant sources, both groups were interested in bringing a project (such as a playground enhancement) to a school or non-profit in a lower income area of the community that served a large youth population.

With connections developed through DPS' Challenge Team efforts, Capt. Moretto was able to quickly connect with the Sunnyvale School District to explore opportunities.  Superintendent Dr. Ben Picard suggested a playground project at Bishop Elementary...and with that, the project was born.

Throughout the months of December and early January, Rebuilding Together created plans, gathered equipment and signed up volunteers to meet at the school on MLK Day.The scope of the project was refined to concentrate on the wonderful school garden that is tended by the children at the school, with the help of the Sunnyvale Garden Club.  The volunteers worked for many hours to rebuild gardening boxes and planters, install stepping stones and landscape the area with ground cover and gravel. All that participated were truly proud of their efforts and proud of their day of service to Sunnyvale on a day of remembrance of Dr. Martin Luther King.

Everybody can be great. Because anybody can serve. You don't have to have a college degree to serve. You don't have to make your subject and your verb agree to serve.... You don't have to know the second theory of thermodynamics in physics to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.

~Martin Luther King, Jr.

2010 Fire Safety Poster Contest

Congratulations to our 2010 Fire Safety Poster Contest winners! Over 250 posters were submitted from 17 Sunnyvale elementary schools. These posters represented the top posters from each school. The Kiwanis Club of Silicon Valley came to DPS Headquarters to judge these finalists' posters. The top three from each grade kindergarten through 5th were selected.

Fire Poster

The Fire Safety Poster Contest winners were treated to a pizza party at Fire Station #2 hosted by the Sunnyvale Chamber of Commerce and sponsored by Suzette Elliott & Mike Klein State Farm Offices and Kuykendall's Collision Repair.

The following week, the winners were introduced at a Sunnyvale City Council meeting and received their awards. After the ceremony everyone went outside to take photographs with a Sunnyvale Fire Engine! The Fire Safety Poster Contest is just one of many educational programs offered by DPS in our schools.
