Working with the Community

It's a TEAM Effort!

Challenge Team Sunnyvale meets monthly to plan strategies for providing youth and families in our community with the education, mentoring, and guidance necessary to be positive and productive members of our community. Challenge Team Sunnyvale also focuses on the importance of ensuring that families have the basic necessities of life, such as housing, food, clothing and health care.

Upcoming Team Projects:
  • Neighborhood Clean-up/Beautification Days
  • Parent Project (parenting education and mentoring)
  • Teen Job Search (youth employment assistance)
  • Youth Mentoring
  • Health Care Awareness
  • Nutrition Education
Since inception, Challenge Team Sunnyvale has grown to approximately 70 members.  This powerful community group has the ability to guide our youth in a positive way, ensure families have a safe place to live, and safeguard continued economic development in the community.  For more information or to get involved go to

Summit Fire Pic 1
Sunnyvale DPS at the Summit Fire

On May 22, just hours after the Summit Fire broke out; Sunnyvale Public Safety Dispatch received a request for assistance.

Minutes later our Engine 4 responded to the call with Public Safety Officers Orval Jones, Chris Kassel and Brian Gantt and Lt. Tracy Hern onboard. Later that morning, dispatch received a second request for help and at 10:10 a.m. Sunnyvale Engine 3 was on its way with Public Safety Officers Brian Wilkes, Sylvester Johnson, and James Perrone and Lt. Mike Andrade.

For the next four days, eight Public Safety Officers spent 24 hours a day working, eating, and sleeping on the fire line in the Santa Cruz Mountains.  Our officers joined at least 950 firefighters that responded to the Summit Fire with 32 fire crews, 45 engines, 21 water tenders (large tankers carrying water), helicopters, planes and bulldozers.

Lt. Mike Andrade said, "We might be flatlanders not accustomed to wild land firefighting, but you can be proud of the competence, dedication and professionalism Sunnyvale guys displayed in fighting the Summit fire.  We took a beating at times, but we persevered."

Often during the summer months, Sunnyvale Public Safety Fire resources are called upon to assist in areas of California where large fires are burning.  Although wildland fires are rare in Sunnyvale, our Public Safety Officers are trained and equipped to help other agencies around the state.  Our department is especially qualified to help with the protection of homes when a wildfire is approaching.

Sunnyvale Crime Stats Now Available Online
Partnership brings crime and incident data into homes via the Internet

Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety (DPS), along with eight other Santa Clara County law enforcement agencies, has joined forces with CrimeReports.com to provide crime and incident data to Sunnyvale residents.

CrimeReports.com reported crime activity on a map for any location in Sunnyvale. The system identifies the time, location and event type for the most recent 30-day period and is updated every 24 hours.

"By providing our residents with near real-time crime data, we hope residents will become more involved in our community crime prevention efforts," said Captain Doug Moretto.

Chief Don Johnson added, "People want to know what is happening in their neighborhoods. They want to help make a difference in the quality of life in our community and CrimeReports.com can help."

The easy-to-read crime maps, simple crime data tools and frequently asked questions about CrimeReports.com are available at CrimeStats.inSunnyvale.com.
