Things Are Not Always What They Seem

Friends,

When you arrive for worship on Sunday morning, you will notice the large, beautiful Maple tree, by the Teddy Bear Entrance has been removed.  If you were here on Tuesday, when a large portion of the tree came crashing down on the driveway, you will understand why.  The central trunk was rotten.  Given the structural instability of the tree and its proximity to the day care, there was no choice but to remove what remained of the tree.  We are grateful that no one was injured and for all of those who acted quickly to resolve this dangerous situation, as well.

I write for two reasons.  First, I don't want anyone to be unpleasantly surprised.  By all outward appearances it was a large, healthy tree.  Unlike some of the other trees that have been, or will be, taken down, to see the empty space where this tree once stood, without being forewarned, could be quite shocking.  Second, it is a good reminder.  Things are not always what they seem.  Like this tree, many things - communities, churches, colleges, families, friends and individuals, etc. - may seem healthy on the outside.

Let us use this moment to look within our hearts, our relationships, our families, our congregation, our communities to insure we are making life choices which will make us, not only appear healthy on the outside, but bring spiritual health, as well.  See you in church!
