What Do You Think?
Does Faith Make a Difference? Ira and Bill... As the saying goes, "Politics makes strange bedfellows." This is what comes to mind, as I visit with folks about the course Ira invited me to co-teach - "Politics and Religion". The looks on many of their faces suggest they find the combination, shall we say, interesting. However, as Ira has pointed out to our class, while we look at politics and religion, faith and life, from two different perspectives, we share a common desire that our particular world views would lead us to live lives that will make our world better.
Though we come from different starting points, Ira being a secular Jew, and I being a Christian minister, we share many of the same values and beliefs. We believe kindness is more virtuous than cruelty. We believe justice for all is more virtuous than injustice for any. We believe compassion is more virtuous than indifference. We believe tolerance, within reason, is more virtuous than intolerance. We believe that while Jesus has the capacity to love everyone, his ethic includes a preferential option for the poor. These are but a few, but they serve as a good example as to how two very different people can share a common vision for what is True and Good and Beautiful in life. Yes, we share some significant differences, as well. However, by focusing on the values we share, we can find ways to work together for the common good. Moreover, as we seek to understand our differences, we are given opportunities for personal growth, and the potential for a deeper relationship, by being challenged to look from the perspective of the other. For some, this will raise the question: "Then what difference does faith make?" If a secular Jew and a Christian minister, coming from relatively different world views, can share a common vision, for making the world better by living out shared values of what is True and Good and Beautiful, why strive to live the life of faith? First, people of faith do not choose to live as people of faith. We are compelled by God to live this way. While we may choose to reject the gift of faith we have been given, if we have not been given the gift of faith, we cannot live the life of faith. Having said this, I also believe that living the life of faith gives us the greatest hope of living virtuous lives and becoming the people we were created to be. Imagine our lives as great sailing vessels. For myself, the hull is the church; the prow would be worship; the sails, a devotion to God for riding the winds of God Spirit; discipline, service, or any number of virtues might be the keel; and love would be the anchor, "tied with a silver chain". (Sorry, had to pay homage to Crosby, Stills and Nash.) Those who are not people of faith, as well as some who are, using the same metaphor of a ship, might label the parts of the ship quite differently, yet still live a virtuous life. However, staying with this analogy, one of the biggest differences between people of faith and those who are not people of faith, I believe, is the rudder of faith. The rudder of faith gives us purpose and enables us to go in a particular direction. Whereas, a rudderless ship, often founders out of control. Yes, with gracious winds, a rudderless ship may find its way. Yes, with a poor captain, a ship with a rudder may still founder. Nevertheless, it is the ship with a sound captain, a strong rudder and gracious winds that has the greatest hope of reaching its destination. See you in church!

| Tools and Blankets Offering through Church World Service
God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Psalm 46:1
PW is asking for your assistance as we collect money for the Tools and Blankets Offering, which is through Church World Service. There is such a significant need throughout the world for assistance and we have traditionally given to this worthy need. We will be taking the offering the next two weeks and will send it in this fall. The past couple of years we have sent $500 each year.
$25 can provide five warm blankets for a family left homeless by an earthquake or other disaster.
$100 can enable three women to receive a micro-credit loan, a sound investment in their family's future.
$200 can provide a struggling farm family with a draft animal to increase their harvest and carry their produce to market.
