Start the New Year as a Volunteer!

The Wash Day Ministry is seeking volunteers to commit to a weekly or twice-a-month time slot during regular church office hours.  Volunteers will assist participants in doing their laundry and provide caring fellowship.  No special skills are required: all you need is a willingness to reach out and help others.  We will work with you to accommodate your schedule. The ministry will kick off with a training session and dinner on Wednesday, January 5, from 6-8 p.m. to inform volunteers about their duties, how scheduling will work, and other service organizations to which they can refer participants. If interested, please sign up outside the church office or call the office. If you have any questions, contact Erika Solberg at 734-5145 or esolberg@monm.edu. If you cannot attend the training session, we still want you! -- just let us know when you sign up.

'Tis the Season to be Thankful

Look for a sign our WNL children have made.  They want to help you remember to bring food each week for the Jamieson Center box.  You may bring anything non-perishable and place it in the shopping cart or a box at the door.  To make it easier, you could go with a schedule such as this:

Dec. 12 - Raman noodles & soups

Dec. 19 - rice & beans

Dec. 26 - Peanut Butter & Jelly

Jan. 2 - Hamburger/Tuna Helper & tuna  or Mac & Cheese

Let's fill the boxes each week!  Thank you!!

Dear Faith U.P. Youth,

I'm sorry I was not home to thank you in person.  It gave me such a warm feeling to see all the leaves at the curb.  I appreciate all the muscle it took to get them moved to the curb.

Thank you so much for your thoughtfulness.

God bless you,
Marjorie Phelps

What Do You Think?
Bill

Is There No Connection?

The decline of civility is a hot topic and has been for some time.  Whether we are speaking of the passing of simple social graces or our incapacity to seek, or even speak about, the common good in a civil, non-partisan, manner, "polite society", is hard to find.

From college football players using the "F-bomb" within earshot, not only of the children in the stands but all of their coaches, with no repercussions, to unruly fans in the stands...  From students, high school or college, who feel "free speech" gives them the right (which it doesn't) to wear vulgar t-shirts and shout obscenities to the friends, as if they were saying "Hello", to politicians, ambassadors, professional athletes, celebrities, and talk radio hosts, who have no concept of common decency... From cyberspace to the real world...  It seems we live in a dying culture.  Let's not even mention the clothing, or lack thereof.

Many would suggest, things aren't as bad as they seem.  Consider the political cartoons of Lincoln's era or the cultural escapades of the 1960's.  Others want to place blame.  Television, technology, and working mothers are easy scapegoats.  Still, others would say, I am just getting old.

Nevertheless, I do think this is an issue worthy of our reflection.  While I have heard many lament our dying culture, I don't believe I have ever heard anyone make the connection between the decline of Mainline Protestantism, the cultural tour de force of the 1950's, and the decline of civility.  To me, the connection seems obvious.

How can we teach our children to appreciate goodness, truth and beauty, without teaching them about God, the source of what is True and Good and Beautiful?  Truth, Goodness and Beauty are not abstract qualities.  They are concrete expressions of the Truth, Goodness and Beauty of God.  In the relativity of our secular world, they hold no meaning.  Only in the light of God's self-revelation, Jesus Christ, can we begin to approximate these virtues in our lives.

People of faith, if we want a better world, we need to be a better church.  We need to teach our children what is True and Beautiful and Good, Jesus Christ.

See you in church!
