What Do You Think?
          Bill

Who We Are? or Who We Want to Be?

Having a dramatic daughter (the ambiguity of the adjective is intentional) has its advantages.  Margie and I both enjoyed theater, so it is uplifting to watch Elizabeth find so much joy on the stage.  Even more enjoyable is my having had the opportunity to appear on stage with Elizabeth.  Attending rehearsals, sharing challenges and fears, basking in the spotlight offered some wonderful father and daughter moments.

Having a dramatic daughter has its advantages, but it can be a challenge, as well.  We have had many a difficult discussion regarding what is appropriate on stage.  "Why must you take the Lord's name in vain?"  "Do you always have to play the harlot?"  "You're wearing what?"

As you might guess, Margie and I believe we were too lenient.  Elizabeth, on the other hand, believes we rivaled the Puritans.  So, we probably got things about right.  Would that our culture could do the same.

"What is appropriate on the stage?"  By necessity this is a fluid question.  Where is the venue?  Who is the intended audience?  What is the message of the production?  "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" would be a great production for the Prairie Players to perform at the Orpheum.  Not such a good idea for the children's theater at the Buchanan Arts Center.

Not all production decisions are this easy.  Most of our family conversations centered around questionable issues which arose with various high school productions.

Let me say, Margie and I have much respect for the drama teacher at the high school and even greater appreciation for the friendship and direction she offers her students.  So what follows is less a criticism and more an opportunity for reflection.  Is it necessary/appropriate for so many of the high productions to be oriented around such adult themes?

I am not naive.  I understand many high school students hear and use language that is much worse than what is used on stage at the high school.  But is it necessary/appropriate to have so much swearing on stage, particularly the ease with which the Lord's name is used in vain?  I understand many high school students use and abuse alcohol and other drugs more often than we care to admit in Monmouth.  But is it necessary/appropriate to feature the use of alcohol so frequently on the high school stage?  I understand many high school students do not share my beliefs on what is appropriate sexual behavior outside of marriage.  But is it necessary/appropriate to play it so fast and loose on a high school stage?

Don't get me wrong.  I understand, if a high school is going to perform "To Kill a Mockingbird", they are going to use the "N" word on stage.  The redemptive qualities of Harper Lee's work certainly make it a necessary/appropriate production for the high school stage.  What I am speaking of are the productions that do not carry the redemptive weight of a "To Kill a Mockingbird" and use adult themes gratuitously.  Are they necessary/appropriate for the high school stage?

Many would say, "Yes, this is the world in which we live.  'Leave it to Beaver' no longer plays in Peoria or anywhere else."  There is much truth to this argument and it is hard to refute. Nevertheless, given the wide array of uplifting and life affirming theatrical productions from which to choose, I would simply leave you with the question.  "As a culture, are we better off inundating our children with the din of "who we are" or the hope of "who we want to be"?

See you in church!

Christ's Helping Hands Monthly Giving Program

Our focus for November: Jamieson Community Center, which is currently in critical need of financial support. It relies on community donations for the majority of its work, such as the Kids Club afterschool program and its Christmas programs, and it also needs to be able to pay its employees to run such essential programs as the thrift store, food pantry, and senior nutrition program. We are aiming for $500 to reach our yearly giving goal for JCC.  Please consider making a donation using the pew envelopes or by dropping off a check of the church office, and please keep the center in your prayers this month.

'Tis a time for Thanksgiving - We can help!

Look for a sign our WNL children have made.  They want to help you remember to bring food each week for the Jamieson Center box.  You may bring anything non-perishable and place it in the shopping cart or a box at the door.  To make it easier, you could go with a schedule such as this:

Nov. 21 -  Cereal

Nov. 28 - Pancake mix & Syrup

Dec. 5  - Spaghetti Sauce  & noodles

Dec. 12 - Raman noodles & soups

Dec. 19 - rice & beans

Dec. 26 - Peanut Butter & Jelly

Jan. 2 - Hamburger/Tuna Helper & tuna  or Mac & Cheese

Let's fill the boxes each week!  Thank you!!

PW Thank Offering and Potluck

"Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you."  1 Thessalonians 5:18

On November 21, Presbyterian Women will host the annual Thanksgiving potluck immediately following the church service.  Bring a dish to share and table service and join us as we celebrate all that we have been given.

Also, on November 21, PW will be accepting Thank Offering donations (envelopes in pews) which help fund mission projects around the world and health ministries as well.  Last year our congregation donated $650 to the Thank Offering.

For more than 100 years, Presbyterian Women has been generous in giving to the Thank Offering each fall.  The grants have made possible new life and hope for people throughout the world.  The grants have been shared with those close to home and those in great need around the world.  40% of this offering supports hospitals and other health ministries throughout the world.  The  other 60% supports other needs such as homeless shelters, youth programs, elder care programs, and many more.  A list of the grant recipients is on the office window.

Please consider giving to this offering.

Traditionally, we have also collected canned goods for Jamieson Center.  We will continue that tradition, with boxes located in the narthex and by the offices.
