"We discover the joy of giving when we realize that stewardship is everything we do from the moment we confess Jesus Christ as Lord."  Your Money and Your Life

What Do You Think?
Can a New Roof be a Statement of Faith?

A few weeks ago, I led one of our small congregations through their triennial visit.  They are one of the oldest congregations in our presbytery and one of the smallest.  Their Sunday morning worship attendance is usually less than twenty.

To some, theirs would be a most discouraging situation.  Once a thriving rural congregation, they have encountered many of the same challenges as our rural schools, grocery stores and fire stations.  Many of the people have died or moved away.  The resources for sustaining this quality of life are not as plentiful.  While there may, one day, be a resurgence in our rural communities, it will take more than a desire for the quality of life we have lost.  Like urban regentrification, there will need to be a resurgence of those willing to invest themselves in reclaiming this way of life.

Until that day, that community of faith continues a vital ministry in Christ's name.  They host a variety of community gatherings and ministries.  They have a heart for hands on mission.  They have a passion for being the church, not simply for themselves, but for others.

One of the things I was able to lift up, during their triennial vision, was how large their circle of influence was.  Because they are intentional in their evangelism, they have the opportunity to touch the lives of hundreds of people each week, if not each day, with the love of Jesus Christ.  Are there efforts bringing in large numbers of new members?  No.  Just a few here and there. Nevertheless, God is sustaining their ministry for they are participating in Christ's work in their community.

During my visit, we also discussed how, in some ways, even though we are larger, our congregation may have a harder row to hoe than theirs.  Twenty people in their small sanctuary doesn't feel as desolate as a 120 in our sanctuary.  They don't have the cost of heating, insuring or maintaining a facility such as ours.  Their entire building could probably fit in the foot print of our sanctuary.  They don't have the children's ministry, youth ministry, or music ministry that we have, but, then again, they don't have the cost of maintaining a staff, either.

We have been blessed for many generations.  Most recently, we have been able to sustain a vital ministry, even through difficult economic times. We are seeing some wonderful growth in our diversity, not only on Sunday mornings, but in those taking on leadership roles in our various ministries.  Almost every day, I find a reason to give thanks for the new things God is doing in our life together.

Nevertheless, I did wonder, as the contract was signed to put "lifetime" shingles on our sanctuary, which will last longer, the congregation or the roof?  While I am grateful for the modest growth I have witnessed in our efforts to do evangelism, if we are to have a future that lasts longer than our new roof, we will need everyone's help.

Faithful participation in our worship life and opportunities for Christian nurture; reading the Bible; praying for our congregation; making phone calls to family and friends we haven't seen for awhile; inviting friends, old and new, to participate in some of the many ministries our congregation offers are but a few of the ways anyone may share in Christ's work in our community, through our life together.  People who have made this commitment, whether long ago or more recently, will tell you living this life of faith has made all of the difference in their lives.

People of faith, as you look around our community, and the world at large, it is not hard to see, the life of faith may soon go the way of the rural life many of us remember fondly, a quaint memory of a day gone by. It doesn't have to be this way.  However, if our new roof is to become a statement of faith in the future of our congregation, it will take more than wishful thinking.  It will take a resurgence of those, old and new, willing to invest themselves in reclaiming this way of life as people of faith.

See you in church!

Paradox
of Our Time

From their October 2010 Heart-Line News edition, the Galesburg Rescue Mission and Women's Shelter included the following information about the paradox of our time in history.  I found it quite interesting and wanted to share...
  • We spend more, but have less; we buy more, but enjoy it less
  • We have bigger houses and smaller families;
  • More conveniences, but less time;
  • More medicine, but less wellness
  • We read too little, watch TV too much, and pray too seldom
  • We have multiplied our possessions, but reduced our values
  • These are the times of tall men, and short character;
  • profits, and shallow relationships
  • These are the days of two incomes, but more divorce;
  • Of fancier houses, but broken homes.
  • We've learned how to make a living, but not a life;
  • We've added years to life, not life to years;
  • We've cleaned up the air, but polluted the soul.
