What Do You Think?
Was Our Worship Joyful Last Sunday?

We could ask this question about any service of worship.  However, given our gospel reading, Jesus' parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus, last Sunday's worship should prove particularly enlightening.

Unless your life is like that of Lazarus, it is hard to imagine hearing this parable and feeling much joy.  Where was the good news for the rich man, or his brothers?  Even, if your life is like that of Lazarus, where is the joy in that?  So, it would seem, if we can find the joy in our worship last Sunday, we should be able to find it every Sunday.

Was our worship joyful last Sunday?  If we were to ask this question of everyone who worshipped with us, we would probably find a wide range of answers.  Some might say, "Yes", because they enjoyed the music.  Others might say, "No", for the same reasons.  Some might say, "Yes", because they enjoyed the liturgy or the sermon.  Others might say, "No", for the same reason.  Some might say, "Yes", because, whether or not they enjoyed the music, liturgy or sermon, they enjoyed being in worship with family and friends.  Some might say, "No", for the same reason.

If we use our personal experience as the barometer of our joy, in effect asking the question: "How did worship make me feel?"  Then, we may be assured, on any given Sunday, there will be those who found worship joyful and those who didn't.  Is there a way to speak of the joy of worship, apart from personal experience?  Another way to ask this question would be:  Can worship be joyful, even if I did not enjoy it?

In our "Welcome to the Presbyterian Church" class, we had an excellent discussion of worship, particularly the source of our joy in worship.  Here I found the comments of those participating in the class especially insightful.  Together, we concluded that the source of our joy in worship comes not necessarily from the particular elements, but from our transformation and renewal.

We might enjoy the music, liturgy and sermon, or not.  We might enjoy the company of those worshipping with us, or not.  We might enjoy a particular scripture reading, or not.

Nevertheless, if we have truly worshipped - meaning, if we came to worship with humble and contrite hearts, fully expecting an encounter with God; if we prepared for that encounter by praying and reading the Bible; if we opened our hearts and minds to hear God's Word; and, if we left knowing the faithfulness of our worship would be reflected in the faithfulness of our
lives - if we have truly worshipped, then our worship will have been joyful.

For the joy of worship come not from the particular elements of our worship.  That would be akin to the joy of entertainment.  Rather, the joy of worship is found in the transformation and renewal that occurs in our lives, when, in our worship we have come face to face with God.

Was our worship joyful last Sunday?  Without question.  Opportunities for transformation and renewal, that arise when we are in the presence of God, were plentiful.  Was your worship joyful last Sunday?  That depends.  Did you truly worship?

See you in church!
