The guest speaker for the Faith & Life Class will be Susan VanKirk speaking  on "The Town, the School, and the Students Who Taught Me".

Susan Van Kirk is publishing a collection of short stories about teaching at Monmouth High School from 1968-2002.  Best guess on release date: late August, early September

The book is titled "Mr Vonnegut and Me" (And Other Tales from a Teaching Life)  It contains 15 short stories that span the length of one teaching career and describe the joys and concerns, the passion and the sadness, the ups and the downs of a life in a high school classroom. It begins with coming to Monmouth and adjusting to small town life. Some of the stories are about children whom church members know and/or remember: John Critser, Barb Stansell, Brian Hendel, Dana Woodall, Chuck Petersen...and on and on.
Graduation Invitation

Elizabeth Myers and her family would very much like to invite her church family to her graduation open house on Friday, May 21 from 5-8 at the American Legion.  Please come and enjoy a Nacho Bar and of course cake!  We hope you can come.

Pentecost

Don't forget to wear Red this Sunday.  Red is the liturgical color for Pentecost.  It reminds us of the tongues of fire which rested upon the heads of the disciples as they became filled with the holy spirit.  They then were sent into the world to proclaim the salvation of God through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.  Some people refer to Pentecost as the Birthday of the Christian Church.

Parents of Graduates

If your son or daughter is graduating from any institution this year, please let us know.  Also, include where they will be attending school and/or their plans for the future.

Church Lawn

To cut down on expenses again this summer, we are asking for volunteers to mow the church lawn. (Please plan on using your own mower.) If you are interested, please sign-up on the office door.  Thank you!

Softball?

We've been asked to get a team together this year.  I've been told that Tony Meyer is trying to work things out so that it is less competitive and more fun for everyone.

If you'd like to head up a team for FUPC, call Heather.

Rummage Sale Thank You

"In Everything Give Thanks"
There is so much to be thankful for. In Paul's letter to the Thessalonians he states, "Rejoice always...in everything give thanks; for that is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you." 5:13

We are very grateful to so many for making this year's sale a success.  We made $1100. 87 after a few expenses.  None of this would be possible without all of you.  We are especially grateful to our sorters and pricers who spent days doing a fantastic job.  Thanks also to all of you who brought things in to sell.  Every year it is exciting to see what will come in.  Thanks too to those who watched over the sale and cashiered.  And finally, thank you to the two men who hauled and moved the heavy stuff.  You are all fantastic!!!  Now, start saving up for next year.

What Do You Think?

fall leaves
Must Healing Always be Accompanied by Pain?

"What was he thinking? How could he do such a thing?' But even as she began to pick up the shattered pieces of her life, she knew her healing had begun."

What came to your mind, as you thought about this woman?  Who did this to her? What caused her pain? From where will her healing come?  Must healing always be accompanied by pain?

I have kept her words intentionally vague, not to protect her privacy, but to point out, she could be any of us.  Hers might have been an abusive father, an unfaithful husband or a wayward son.  Hers might have been a mean-spirited colleague, a thoughtless classmate or a hurtful pastor, teacher or coach.  Hers might have been a God who seemed absent at the most important moment of her life, when one she loved died; acquired a dreadful disease or suffered a terrible accident; or, turned out not to be the person she believed them to be.

Most of us have been, or will be, at a place in our lives when those we love and trust, even God, are not who we thought they were or they claimed to be.  In a moment, a thoughtless word, an "unforgivable" act, or our sheer helplessness reveals the truth and our lives are shattered.  Our hope, as people of faith, is that even in times like these we may be healed.

As a pastor, I am privileged to share in people's pain more than most.  In almost twenty years of ministry, more than a handful of people have told me, "You saved my life."  However true their words may be, it was of course not I, but the God I serve, who protected them or brought healing to their lives.

Why it sometimes seems God is not there for everyone, I cannot say.  I may only witness to what I have experienced, when God is present to pick up the pieces, and live in hope that God is present even when he cannot be seen.  What I have witnessed is this:  brokenness, pain and death are the fertile ground from which new life grows.  This is our hope as followers of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, whom God raised from the dead.

Must healing always be accompanied by pain?  I cannot say, but I live in hope that, one day, all our pain will be accompanied by healing.

See you in church!
