Focus on Faith

Greetings!

I want to thank the youth for their commitment to our worship service this past Sunday.  They really put themselves out there and I was extremely proud of their leadership!

I was able to video record the sermon skit "Everything" prior to our worship service and wanted to share it with you:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1pHUlUN_zqo

Whether or not you were present last Sunday, I hope you'll take the time to watch this video
and see it with this understanding... God created us and this amazing world to be shared in relationship with him.  In giving us life he provided food and water to nourish our bodies and the ability to fully enjoy and engage in all of his creation.  Still, being given life we are tempted, just as Jesus was.  These "temptations" may come in different forms for different people, but they are temptations none the less.  When we become distracted by them we lose sight of the true joy that was brought to us through Jesus Christ our Saving Lord.  By God's grace we are forgiven!

This world, today especially, continues to fill our children and youth with empty ideas of self sufficiency and self worth.  Now, more than ever they are looking for hope!  Their message skit on Sunday may have been a little foreign to most of you, but God's Word never changed - just the voice from which it came!

Peace,
Heather

Gifts of Women Sunday on April 18, 2010

The congregation of Faith United Presbyterian Church will "Celebrate the Gifts of Women" on Sunday, April 18, 2010, to honor all women who contribute their gifts to the church and community, and lifts up issues of women's and children's rights.  The order of worship was written by Kathryn Schneider and is titled "Women Keeping The Message Alive."  God's message lives, and women participate in keeping the message alive.  To celebrate the gifts of women is to celebrate the gift of the message God shares with and through them. The worship service will be led by women from Faith United Presbyterian Church.  Mrs. Sherrill Mixer from East Moline will deliver the sermon.  A celebratory coffee hour, hosted by Presbyterian Women, will be held after the worship service.  Everyone is invited to " ... celebrate the gifts we have been given by God ..." in worship and in fellowship.

What Do You Think?

From Where Does Joy Come?

Franciscan Benediction

May God bless you with discomfort at easy answers, half truths,
and superficial relationships,
so that you may live deep
within your heart.
May God bless you with anger at injustice, oppression, and exploitation of people, so that you may work for justice, freedom and peace.
May God bless you with tears to shed for those who suffer from pain, rejection, starvation, and war, so that you may reach out your hand to comfort them and to turn their pain into joy.
And may God bless you
with enough foolishness to believe that you can make
a difference in this world, so that you can do what others claim cannot be done.
                    -Author unknown

On Tuesday, I received a phone call from someone who worshipped with us on Maundy Thursday.  She and her husband were especially moved by the video of the Franciscan Benediction and shared the prayer with their family.

As you may remember, I commented on the joy present in the eyes of the people in the video, many of whom were living in squalor.  Such joy is in sharp contrast to the quality of spirit so many of us seem to embody amidst our relative wealth and privilege.  Our sister in Christ had noticed not only the contrast from the video, but also in her work with the poor.  Why is this?  From where does such joy come?

It goes without saying, not every poor person is joyful and not every wealthy person lives in spiritual misery.  Moreover, as followers of Jesus Christ, we have a mandate to share in Christ's ministry to bring good news to the poor and alleviate the suffering of others.

Nevertheless, in my short life, I have watched the sideshow of our culture's spiritual deprivation - promoted by Jerry Springer, Maury Povich, TMZ and even the Today Show - become the center ring!  Is it simply that I have become "old" or could it be the decline of Mainline Protestantism has ushered in our cultural decline?  When we read the scriptures, the answer seems pretty clear.

When Margie and I were students at Princeton Theological Seminary, we had a friend from Ghana, Dinah Abbey Mensah.  Dinah is probably the most joy filled person we have ever met.  I will never forget the day she showed us pictures of her home in Ghana - a single room, cement block building, with a dirt floor.

People of faith, our family has a lovely life, a beautiful home, a wonderful church home, good food, excellent healthcare, everything we should want, for which we are grateful and appreciative.  Yet, we do not have Dinah's joy.  From where might such joy come?

See you in church!
