Food Pantry Success!
The need for food at the Jamieson Center food pantry never ceases. We did a great job of giving to this cause in October and November. We can help again. Let's Do It Again!
Please bring food each week for the Jamieson Center box. You may bring anything non- perishable and place it in the box at the door. To make it easier you could go with a schedule such as this. Jan. 31 - Spaghetti Sauce & noodles Feb. 7 - Raman noodles & soups Feb. 14 - Anything pink, red, or white Feb. 21 - Rice & beans Feb. 28 - Peanut Butter & Jelly
Let's fill the boxes each week! Thank you!! |

Youth Famine is Approaching!
We are gearing up for this year's 30 Hour Famine to take place on February 26 & 27. This is the first year that World Vision has let their participants designate where their funds can go. Appropriately, we've already designated them to go toward the Haiti Earthquake Relief.
29,000 children die every day because of malnutrition. Think about that... can you imagine one of your own children literally dying for food? With that in mind, I would like to help the youth have a visual of that amount during the famine by making a labyrinth of pennies - 29,000 of them. I will have a coin jar in the social hall for you to throw your pennies into.
The good news is that when we combine all those pennies we have lying around together, we will also be able to feed a child for 290 days!
Our kick-off has been changed from February 7 (forgot about Super Bowl Sunday!) to January 31, 2010, from 4 - 6:00 p.m. This, too, is as important to attend as the famine. I'm praying that ALL YOUTH will be encouraged to participate in this meaningful event that will, hopefully, draw them closer to our sisters and brothers in need.

About the Famine
As you know, the youth will be participating in World Vision's 30 Hour Famine on February 26 & 27. We have been doing the famine with our youth for over 15 years! This year, like every year, we will be working hard to raise hunger awareness in our community.
The past several years we have worked with Starting Point by feeding their homeless shelter and also made from scratch, soup, to fill up their "Empty Bowls" (a fundraiser for Starting Point sponsored by The Potter and the school) for a donation that went toward their ministry. Although the schools are know longer doing "Empty Bowls", the youth still feel it's important to continue their service to Starting Point.
The University of Illinois Extension will be sponsoring a Hispanic outreach - 3 on 3 basketball tournament - that Saturday at the 1st Street Armoury. To continue our famine relationship with Starting Point we've agreed to run the concession stand from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. during this even.
Pete & Kristin Sorensen have donated bread from Subway to make sandwiches for the concession stand. What I don't have is food to fill up those sanwiches. I am requesting slick meat - all kins - ham, bologna, salami and american sliced cheese. There is a sign up on the office door.
To break our fast, I'm looking for individuals to plan and prepare a meal for our youth for 6:00 p.m. on Feb. 27. This would be one way of thanking them for their service as well as it being a great way to close our time together with great food, fellowship, and reflection. If you are interested in helping with this, thank you! Please call Heather at 734-5129.

Potato Bake Thank You
We had a great turn out for our Potato Bake this past Sunday! Many of you were even generous enough to make a salad and/or dessert to help defray costs. We had our youth bring the potato stuffings, so our expense was a minimal amount.
It appeared to have gone rather smoothly this year and it seemed like everyone enjoyed themselves! We even had leftovers that we were able to share with those at home. The day was a blessing! Thank you for acknowledging how important our youth ministry program is by always supporting our mission!

What Do You Think?
Why Should I Read the Bible?
The short answer, the answer many of us learned as children, is "The Bible is the word of God." But what does this mean? Christians do not agree. For some, it means the Bible is "inerrant". They believe, there are no errors to be found in the Bible. Every "jot and tittle" is attributed to God's divine hand. For some, it means the Bible is "inspired" by God. They believe, God "breathed life" into the writing of the Bible in such a way that, in spite of any errors which may be present because of the humanity of the scribes, the Bible reveals the word of God. For some, to say the Bible is the word of God means the Bible is "authoritative". They believe, whether or not it is divine, the Bible offers teachings about life and faith and God, which are helpful to living our lives. For some, the Bible is just a book with little or no authority. One of my courses in Pittsburgh this month was devoted to exploring many of the questions and issues related to the authority/interpretation of the Bible. What does it mean to say the Bible is the Word of God? What does it mean to claim the authority of scripture? What does it mean to be people of the Book? We spent a week trying to answer these questions, and countless others, through our readings, lectures and class discussions. We only scratched the surface. The church's history of interpreting scripture, and claiming its authority, is rich and complex. From the authorship, through the canonization, to the proclamation of the Bible, issues abound. There is no short answer to the question, "What does it mean to say the Bible is the Word of God?" As Presbyterians, we believe the Bible is the word of God because it bears witness to Jesus Christ. The Bible's authority comes from its witness to the love of God revealed in the saving act of Christ's life, death, resurrection and ascension. This is precisely why we must read it for ourselves. Those who read it with humble hearts and open minds may yet have many questions - about life and faith and God - but they will discover this truth. The Bible is the word of God because it reveals the Word of God, Jesus Christ. See you in church! Pastor Myers revhaggis1@hotmail.com
