Responding to the Earthquake in Haiti
Give. Act. Pray.
We give thanks that the PC(USA) mission personnel and mission groups in Haiti at the time of the earthquake are safe and accounted for with one suffering severe enough injuries that she needed to be airlifted to Florida. Join other Presbyterians in the ongoing response to this disaster as you give, act and pray.
Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) coordinating efforts with our ecumenical and international partners in the relief work in Haiti. Carlos Cardenas is on the ground in Port-au-Prince as part of the initial response team. The past few days' priorities have focused on search and rescue, medical attention for those injured by the earthquake, along with food distribution for the survivors. Food and fuel supplies are limited and there is urgent need to bring in these most essential resources at this time. Fifteen sites have been identified for distribution of relief items. Distribution of food and clean water are a top priority. It is estimated that 200,000 families, nearly one million people, are without homes and living out in the open air. Temporary shelter is a focus for this next week. PDA and its partners are seeking to bring in 20,000 tents to Port-au-Prince in this next week. There are three to four thousand tents currently on site. The greatest need from the church, along with prayer, is financial support in order to gather and strategically mobilize these most urgent relief supplies in the critical days that lie ahead.
Give - Financial support for relief efforts can be made online and designated to DR000064. Gifts can also be made by phone at (800) 872-3283, and checks can be mailed to Presbyterian Disaster Assistance, P.O. Box 643700, Pittsburgh, PA 15264-3700. Act - Prepare for a special worship service in your congregation this Sunday using the hymn, bulletin inserts and other worship resource available from Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA). Congregations and individuals can also put together hygiene kits and baby kits to be distributed through Church World Service. For information, visit the PDA Web site. Pray - Join with others in lifting up the people of Haiti and those seeking to provide aid in this critical time. As the eyes of the world turn to Haiti, let us join our hearts in prayer. | |

Food Pantry Success!
The need for food at the Jamieson Center food pantry never ceases. We did a great job of giving to this cause in October and November. We can help again. Let's Do It Again!
Please bring food each week for the Jamieson Center box. You may bring anything non- perishable and place it in the box at the door. To make it easier you could go with a schedule such as this. Jan. 24 - Pancake mix & Syrup Jan. 31 - Spaghetti Sauce & noodles Feb. 7 - Raman noodles & soups Feb. 14 - Anything pink, red, or white Feb. 21 - Rice & beans Feb. 28 - Peanut Butter & Jelly
Let's fill the boxes each week! Thank you!! |
Youth Famine is Approaching!
We are gearing up for this year's 30 Hour Famine to take place on February 26 & 27. This is the first year that World Vision has let their participants designate where their funds can go. Appropriately, we've already designated them to go toward the Haiti Earthquake Relief.
29,000 children die every day because of malnutrition. Think about that... can you imagine one of your own children literally dying for food? With that in mind, I would like to help the youth have a visual of that amount during the famine by making a labyrinth of pennies - 29,000 of them. I will have a coin jar in the social hall for you to throw your pennies into.
The good news is that when we combine all those pennies we have lying around together, we will also be able to feed a child for 290 days!
Our kick-off has been changed from February 7 (forgot about Super Bowl Sunday!) to January 31, 2010, from 4 - 6:00 p.m. This, too, is as important to attend as the famine. I'm praying that ALL YOUTH will be encouraged to participate in this meaningful event that will, hopefully, draw them closer to our sisters and brothers in need.
