Be Happy
Faith United Presbyterian Church November 12, 2009
Greetings!

Let me see... what self examination and/or confession should I write about today?  <Insert sarcasm>  Though it was never my intention, that's exactly what this section has turned into!

Now that I've been writing for over a year for the e-newsletter, I must say, I have learned quite a bit about myself!  Knowing that I have committed to writing in this block each week has really helped me zero in on how I interact, respond, and relate to various things and people.

As an analyzer, in general, I usually have plenty of things to discuss.  I can pick things apart with the best of 'em - just ask Mike or Margie!  What I haven't been doing though is consulting God while I discover these things about myself!  How on earth is baring my soul to all of you going to help me change if I'm not first willing to come clean with God?

Revelation # ??? ...  God needs to hear from me first!

Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think of anything as being from ourselves, but our sufficiency is from God.  ~2 Corinthians 3:5

Blessings,
Heather

Christ's Helping Hands:  Starting Point

Our focus on mission for the month of November is Starting Point.  Starting Point was founded nearly thirty-five years ago as a non-profit, faith based ministry serving men living with substance abuse.  Today, it is still a faith based ministry relying on God to meet the many needs of those who receive services provided by Starting Point.  God faithfully provides for Starting Point through support from local churches and donations from individuals and community organizations.

Food Needed!

Jamieson Center has had to close their food bank occasionally because their shelves were empty.  In talking with Dori, I discovered that this is problem this time of year up until December.

We can help!

Please bring food each week for the Jamieson Center box.  You may bring anything non-perishable and place it in the box at the door.  To make it easier you could go with a schedule such as this.

Nov. 15 - Raman noodles & soups
Nov. 22 - rice & beans
Nov. 29 - Peanut Butter & Jelly

Let's fill the boxes each week!  Thank you!!

WNL - Bread Needed

Please sign up on the office door if you would be able to bring a loaf of baked bread for the WNL family supper on November 18.

Quilt Showing

Come see the quilts from the Warren County Museum on Saturday, November 21, from 9:00 - 2:00 p.m.  Some are signed by many members of surrounding communities.  Others have stories associated with them.  Some need more information to go with them and maybe you would have something to offer.

Bonus - Take a tour of "Grandma's House", the only completed room at the new museum.

Adminission by donation.

Concert

Tom Booth and Leo Ramer will hold a Sacred Classical Music Favorites Concert on November 21, at 7:00 p.m. at the Immaculate Conception Church in Monmouth.  Free will donation will be received.  Open to the public.

PW Thank Offering

"...and all the people rejoiced because of what God had done..."
                                                    2 Chronicles 29:36, NSRV

The Presbyterian Women of Faith United Presbyterian Church will be collecting the annual Presbyterian Women Thank Offering (including Health Ministries) on November 22, 2009. This expression of thanksgiving, dating back to 1888, is an historical and important part of the mission and ministry of Presbyterian Women.  From nearly 70 requests, the Creative Ministries Offering Committee selected 14 projects in the United States and 13 projects in other parts of the world  to receive grants from the 2009 Thank Offering as Presbyterian Women strive to live out their commitment to Christ and the church while working for peace and justice.

Your monetary gift can build up the lives of others for the sake of the gospel of Jesus Christ.  Throughout the world, many people are the beneficiaries of offerings received by Presbyterian Women.  Projects that are consistent with the mission concerns and policies of the Presbyterian Church (USA) have received funding so that hospitals and schools have been built; doctors, nurses, and teachers have been trained; orphans and vulnerable children have received loving care; programs have been established to rebuild lives and restore the dignity of those who have suffered because of violence, conflicts and war; and women who have been empowered and trained to support their families and themselves through income-generating projects and micro-enterprise.  The projects funded by the Thank Offering meet basic human needs that relate directly to the people being served.

Thank Offering envelopes can be found in the pews in the sanctuary.

A potluck dinner, hosted by Presbyterian Women, will be held after worship service on November 22, 2009.  All members and friends of the church are invited to break bread together as we rejoice with thanksgiving.  Please bring a food dish to share, table service, and a joyful heart.

Advent Fair/Potluck

Our entire church family and friends are invited to our Advent Fair and Potluck on the first Sunday of Advent, November 29.

4:00 p.m. - Hanging of the Greens/Decorating the church as well as making crafts and playing games.

5:30 p.m. - Potluck Supper (bring a dish to pass and table service.)

This is a fun evening for people of all ages.    Please join us as we prepare for the coming of Jesus - the reason for the season,  the Messiah.

Please call the church office (5129) or sign up on the office door and let us know how many to expect so we can have enough crafts.

Isabel Circle is sponsoring a mitten tree again this year to help make sure there will be warm little fingers this winter.  Please bring new mittens, gloves, and hats, and place them on the tree in the social hall by Sunday, December 6.  The mittens will be taken to JamiesonCenter to be available at their Christmas Store.  Thank You.

Practical evangelism to help your own church attract, welcome and retain new members.

If you've been asking yourself ...
  • How can we make our church communications, signs, buildings, property, website and worship more inviting and welcoming?
  • How can we make visitors want to return to our church and stay?
  • I'm private & reserved; how can I 'do' evangelism in my church?
  • Many members of my church are uncomfortable with 'evangelism' and are resistant to change; how can I motivate and interest them?

Then please join us for this event!  For more information contact Julie Bainbridge at jbainbridge@greatriverspby.org or Linda Miller at linmil@macomb.com.

What Gifts has God  Given You to Share?

"God's various gifts are handed out everywhere; but they all originate in God's Spirit.  God's various ministries are carried out everywhere; but they all originate in God's Spirit.  God's various expressions of power are in action everywhere; but God himself is behind it all.  Each person is given something to do that shows who God is:  Everyone gets in on it, everyone benefits.  All kinds of things are handed out by the Spirit, and to all kinds of people!  The variety is wonderful:  wise counsel, clear understanding, simple trust, healing the sick, miraculous acts, proclamation, distinguishing between spirits, tongues, interpretation of tongues.  All these gifts have a common origin, but are handed out one by one by the one Spirit of God.  He decides who gets what, and when."
1Corinthians 12:4-11

Everyone has spiritual gifts.  According to the Apostle Paul, the gifts of the Spirit are many and varied.  God is their source and they are meant to be shared, so the love of God may be revealed to the world.

As you consider our life together, what spiritual gifts have you witnessed or discovered?  What spiritual gifts have you shared or received?  Where are the areas in our ministry where we are making wise use of the gifts we have been given?  Where are the areas in our ministry where we could be making better use of the gifts we have been given?

As you consider our community, what spiritual gifts do we have to share with others?  Are we making wise use of the gifts we have been given or are there opportunities for us to do better?

As you consider our life together and the community we serve, prayerfully consider your own life.  How has God blessed you spiritually?  What spiritual gifts do you have to share?  Are there people or opportunities for ministry, where your gifts may be used faithfully?  Are there people waiting for the blessings God has given you to share?

See you in church!
