Focus on Faith
Be Happy
Faith United Presbyterian Church October 1, 2009
Greetings!

Do you ever stop and take the time to really get to know a person?  I'm asking because I've found that I haven't been doing this.  Well, let me rephrase that, I thought I was doing it, but after recently discovering that I'd made a completely wrong judgment about a person - all because I didn't see the bigger picture - I started to rethink the view I had on others.  (Wow!  That even sounds bad as I go back and reread that!)  I guess if you must know the truth, I have been told once or twice that I hear and see only what I want to hear and see!   These things are never easy to admit, believe me!

My point is that I have no idea what it's like to walk in someone else's shoes - whether it be good or bad.  Even when I feel I can relate in some small way, it's still hard to compare what they've gone through with what I've gone through; there's just too much other stuff that comes into play - stuff that I haven't a clue about.

So now that I've got this new understanding about myself, I wonder...will I be able to change 38 years of thinking, reacting, doing, and saying?  I only pray that I can with God's help!

My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.
~Psalm 73:26

Blessings,
Heather

Peacemaking Offering for
Wolrd Communion Sunday October 4

Every year our congregation joins Christians around the world in celebrating World Communion Sunday, whose central focus is the Lord's Supper and its unifying message for all who partake of it. We are one in Christ Jesus and not to be separated by the nations, ethnic groups or denominations we belong to. The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) also marks the day by a call to peacemaking, in part by receiving the Peacemaking Offering, through which we work with others locally, nationally, and internationally to learn and live out the ways of peace.

Our church will retain 25 percent of the Offering.  Another 25 percent goes to our presbytery, and the remaining 50 percent goes to the General Assembly for peacemaking involvement throughout the world.  Please join us on October 4 to celebrate World Communion Sunday and to commit ourselves to working for the unity of the church and the peace of Christ.

What Do You Think?

 What is the Church of
        Jesus Christ?

As Presbyterians, we believe that Jesus Christ is "The Head of the Church"...

"All power in heaven and earth is given to Jesus Christ by Almighty God, who raised Christ from the dead and set him above all rule and authority, all power and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in that which is to come.

a. God has put all things under the Lordship of Jesus Christ and has made Christ Head of the Church, which is his body.

b. Christ calls the Church into being, giving it all that is necessary for its mission to the world, for its building up, and for its service to God. Christ is present with the Church in both Spirit and Word. It belongs to Christ alone to rule, to teach, to call, and to use the Church as he wills, exercising his authority by the ministry of women and men for the establishment and extension of his Kingdom.

c. Christ gives to his Church its faith and life, its unity and mission, its officers and ordinances. Insofar as Christ's will for the Church is set forth in Scripture, it is to be obeyed. In the worship and service of God and the government of the church, matters are to be ordered according to the Word by season and sound judgment, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

d. In affirming with the earliest Christians that Jesus is Lord, the Church confesses that he is its hope and that the Church, as Christ's body, is bound to his authority and thus free to live in the lively, joyous reality of the grace of God." (G.1.10001 Book of Order)

We believe that Jesus Christ is the "Head of the Church", but who is Jesus Christ and what is the church to you?  What are your first thoughts or impressions when you hear these words?  What are the feelings these words conjure in your heart and mind?  Do they resonate with what the church has historically proclaimed about Christ?  When you consider our particular congregtion, do we look, sound and act like the church of which Jesus Christ is the head?

As you reflect upon these questions, give thanks for some of the ways the church has enriched your life and you have enriched our life together; pray to be forgiven for those times when you have been a stumbling block and pray for the ability to forgive those who have been a stumbling block to you; and, ask the Holy Spirit to help each of us to become the people of faith God has called us to become, together.

See you in Church!
