Focus on Faith
Be Happy
Faith United Presbyterian Church September 3, 2009
Greetings!

The time is quickly approaching to celebrate the renewal of our life together, as we begin another program year.  On Homecoming Sunday, September 13, we will praise God with special music from the Maple City Dixieland Jazz Band; share in the Sacrament of the Lord's Supper; discover the vitality of our ministry; feast on hot dogs and hamburgers; and, welcome back many who have been "on holiday" for the summer.  You are encouraged to attend this festival Sunday and invite a friend!

Worship is at 10:30 a.m.  There will be a "Know Your Church Fair" in the social hall immediately following worship.  The all-church picnic will be held in the social hall and a few tables will be on the church lawn of the southwest side of the building.  Bring a dish or two to share and your own table service.  Meat and drinks will be provided.

God's Puzzle - Homecoming Sunday School Kickoff

Everyone is invited to participate in this intergenerational kickoff to the 2009-10 Sunday School year on Homecoming Sunday, September 13.  Classes will begin on September 20, at 9:15 a.m., but before they do, we need to solve God's Puzzle.  Families with children will be sent a piece of a large puzzle which we need to be brought back on September 13 (along with your family).   Each one of us is a piece of God's puzzle, and the church (Christ's body) needs all of us in order to be complete.  What happens if a piece is missing....?  All are welcome to join us at 9:15 a.m. on Sunday, September 13 in the social hall for puzzles, games and a fantastic photo scavenger hunt.

Wednesday Night Live

WNL will begin on September 16 this year with a family cookout.  In the weeks to follow we will need teachers, table parents, dishwashers, aids, musicians, and all kinds of people to help.  Please look for the WNL sign up sheet in the social hall and consider how you can make a difference in a child's life.  Every job is so important, please sign up to help.

If you have any questions please call Margie in the office, 734-5129.  Thank you.

Thank You!

Margie, Elizabeth, Will and I are grateful to each of you for the opportunity to travel to Scotland this summer, as a family.  For us to have this experience, as well as, for Margie, Elizabeth and Will to have a better understanding of where my studies have taken place, is a wonderful gift.  We are grateful for Silk Cords and Hallie Hottle for leading worship in my absence, as well as, all of the members of the congregation and staff who stepped up to make sure the work of our church continued while Margie and I were away.  Of course, it goes without saying, we are especially grateful for Heather, who keeps things running smoothly, whether I am here or not.  Thank you, all, for your generosity and grace.

What Do You Think?

fall leaves

Can We Rejoice in All Circumstances?

"Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice.  Let your gentleness be known to everyone.  The Lord is near.  Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.  And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."
Philippians 4:4-7

Looking out across the North Sea, at a place on the beach where our family had walked together three weeks before, I was overwhelmed with joy and sadness.  It was my last night in Scotland.  I had just finished the circuit of places I wanted to visit "one last time" before I left.

As I remembered our travels through London and Coventry, Edinburgh and Aberdeen, I was overhelmed with joy for the places we went, the people we encountered and the times we enjoyed.  I was overcome with sadness, because our travels had ended and, perhaps, more than anytime since they had left Scotland, I missed my family.  Strangely enough, I was also overwhelmed with joy for the people of Aberdeen, my colleagues in my doctoral program, the work we had accomplished and the times we shared.  Likewise, I was overcome with sadness for, once again, I would be leaving Scotland, a place and people I have come to love, more and more, over the fifteen plus years I have been visiting.

Walking back to my room at the Alba, past the young children playing soccer, with the majestic sea at my back and a glorious sunset lighting my path, I was overcome with joy and gratitude to God, amidst my overwhelming sadness, and I remembered this is what it means to worship.

As I reflect on that experience, I am reminded of what a precious gift it is to be people of faith.  I am reminded that not everyone has been blessed to look at life - the sorrow and suffering, as well as, the joy and laughter - through the eyes of faith.  To be given hope in times of despair, to know comfort in seasons of grief, to rejoice in all things and to be given peace, a peace that passes all understanding, because we have come to know the love of God in Jesus Christ is a wondrous gift.  It is no wonder Jesus looked upon those who had no faith, as sheep without a shepherd, and had compassion upon them.  Likewise, it is no wonder Jesus despised those who had taken this precious gift they had been given and made of it a moral and spiritual burden.  For the gift of faith is the greatest gift we may receive.

In returning home and preparing for another year in the life of the people of Faith United, I am aware that for some this has been a relatively ordinary summer, while for others it has been quite extraordinary.  I look forward to hearing about both.  While a great joy for some, I am also aware the season has been most sorrowful for others.  In the knowledge that it is God who strengthens us, I am prepared to share in those times, as well.

Grateful in my time away and grateful in my return, I look forward to sharing in your lives and faith, your sorrows and your joys, rejoicing in each, for the love of Jesus Christ we have to share.  See you in church!
