Focus on Faith
Be Happy
Faith United Presbyterian Church July 23, 2009
Greetings!

If you weren't here this past Monday evening to see Pastor Myers get his head shaved, you really missed out!  There was a lot of laughter while Will got to buzz some of his dad's hair - pay back time, right Will?  The funniest part was when Julie McVey trimmed it into a mohawk before shaving it completely with a lovely bright pink razor.  But the best is that they raised over $1600.00 for Kandithankulam, India!  Thank you for your contributions.

I had Korey record all of it and post it on youtube for your viewing pleasure.  She did have to break it down into five different parts, each being around 7 minutes long.  However, it's definitely worth watching!

After it was all said and done, the pastor's scalp didn't look as out of place as what I would've thought... as he sat in the chair I could see that his sockless feet now matched perfectly - pale white!

Enjoy!

Jamieson Center - STARS Project

STARS stands for Supplies To Arrive Ready for School.  Many churches have participated in the past years by collecting donated  school supplies and supplies have been distributed to the schools in Warren County.  This program has been very successful in providing school supplies to children who come to school without the necessary supplies throughout the year.

Donations can be dropped off at the church or at Jamieson Center.  Please make donations no later than July 27.

Monetary donations toward the program are also welcome.  Checks should be made out to Jamieson Center STARS.  If you have any questions, call Dori Anderson at Jamieson Center, 734-4251.

Church Lawn

To cut down on expenses, we are asking for volunteers to mow the church lawn this summer.  (Please plan on using your own mower.)  A weekly schedule has been made for those who would like to sign up on the office door.  If you had signed up previously, you will need to sign up again.  Thank You!

Meals on Wheels

The Nutrition Program at Strom Center is very dependent on the assistance of churches and individuals to provide a very valuable service to our area seniors.  The home-delivered meal program makes it possible for approximately 80 seniors in the Monmouth area alone, to enjoy a nutritious hot meal each day of the week, Monday through Friday.  Each year our church takes its turn to serve for the month of August.  If you are able to volunteer a day or two, please sign up on the ofice door.  Thanks for your support in this wonderful program!

Cardiovascular Program

The Warren County Health Department is starting a new cardiovascular program geared towards people of all ages and fitness levels in Warren County.  It is a twelve week walking program for groups of 5.  Cost per participant is $15.00.  Each participant will get a walking journal, pedometer and a chance to win prizes.  There will be 5 mandatory meeting times through out the 12 week program.  The dates are:
  • August 1
  • August 29
  • September 19
  • October 3
  • October 24

All meetings will be held at 9:00 a.m. at the OSF Holy Family community classroom.  All other meeting times that will be announced will be optional.  August 1st is the orientation/kickoff for the program and October 24th will be the wrap up luncheon with major prize winners announced.  Other mandatory dates will be health education sessions.

Show off Your Smarts at Team Trivia Night!

The Mission committee is sponsoring a Team Trivia Night in the social hall on Sunday, August 30, at 5:00 p.m. to encourage fellowship and to raise money for Kandithankulam, Jamieson Center, Starting Point, and Rainbow Riders.  Categories will cover a wide range, from sports, the Bible, history, and more.  The entry fee for each six-person team is $30.00. We encourage you to invite non-church members and to make your group intergenerational.  Registration forms, due August 16, are available around the church.  Contact the church office if you need help forming your team.  There will be prizes for the winners and losers.  Drinks will be provided and snacks will be on sale, so bring some friends to cheer you on!

Are There New Ways for Us to Use Our Worship Space?

As we continue our discussion of Thomas Long's book, "Beyond the Worship Wars - Building Vital and Faithful Worship", we turn to the fifth quality of vital and faithful congregations.  According to Dr. Long, "Vital and Faithful congregations creatively adapt the space and environment of worship."  According to Dr. Long, "a good worship space is not merely the result of decor; it is also the product of mature theological reflection about the nature of worship.  Form follows function, and well planned sanctuaries communicate by their very design the kind of worship that takes place within."

Without question our sanctuary is wonderfully suited for our style of traditional, Reformed, worship.  We have a large chancel area with beautiful wood work, which offers a warm open and inviting space for good sized groups to share in the leadership of our worship.  We have an extraordinary pipe organ to accompany our worship.  Our three aisles offer the opportunity to use that space creatively and to encourage congregational involvement in our worship.  Even when our congregation is not gathered for worship, our sanctuary is a worshipful place to be.  We have been blessed with a wonderful place of sacred space.

One of the foundational beliefs of Presbyterians is that the church is "reformed, always being reformed, by the Word of God."  So while we hold fast to our theological heritage, when it comes to worship and ministry, we do so, with the understanding that God is "making all things new."  So the question we must ask is "Are there new ways for us to use our worship space?"

As I consider this question, most of the changes that come to mind would be structural and cost prohibitive.  Increasing the size of our narthex, which would in turn decrease the seating capacity of our sanctuary, for the purpose of creating a gathering place near our sanctuary.  Enhancing the lighting in the narthex and replacing the heavy wooden doors with glass.  All of these would create a more inviting atmosphere.

While I love our beautiful wooden doors, they may give the feeling of a fortress, keeping "outsiders" at bay.  Likewise, a brighter, more open narthex, with a natural flow into our garden, would help to create a natural gathering place for fellowship before and after worship, where now we lose people on the way to coffee hour.

As for the sanctuary itself, I am not sure there is much for us to do.  We've enhanced the lighting and the sound system.  Some have asked about a more permanent set up for a projector and screen.  However, our chancel isn't set up in a way that this could be done well.  Where would the projector and screens be mounted?  There is no ceiling, per se, and a central screen would cover the cross.

One area that I hope we will continue to explore is with new paraments and banners.  The new paraments, especially the blue ones for Advent, and the Easter banners offered a wonderful "freshness" to our worship space.  Hopefully, we will continue to add to our resources here.

All of this is to say, we are blessed to have the worship space we have.  Unlike so many sanctuaries which have become obsolete or serve as impediments to worship, our sanctuary still holds a vitality and freshness as a sacred space.  Neverthless, as God is making all things new, we too should be open to reflecting upon our use of this space.  Are there things we could be doing to keep our sanctuary the vital and inviting space it is?

See you in church!

Pastor Myers
